This publication gives information about the aggregate income for agriculture in England, known as Total Income from Farming (TIFF), a measure of the performance of the whole agricultural industry. Aggregate agricultural accounts are a tool for analysing the economic situation of agriculture and are used to support policy making in the UK.

Total Income from Farming is the total profit from all farming businesses in England on a calendar year basis. It measures the return to all entrepreneurs for their management, labour and capital invested. It excludes changes in the values of assets, including stocks, due to price changes but includes non-agricultural activities such as further processing or tourist activities where these cannot be separated from the agricultural business.

It is the preferred measure of aggregate income for the agricultural industry conforming to internationally-agreed national accounting principles required by the UK National Accounts.

This page includes previously published Total Income from Farming (TIFF) in England releases from 2017 onwards. From 2017 to 2020, TIFF England was released biannually. Since 2021, TIFF England has been released annually.

The aggregate account of the UK agriculture sector, known as Total Income from Farming (TIFF), is a measure of the performance of the whole agricultural industry. These family food datasets contain more detailed information than the ‘Family Food’ report and mainly provide statistics from 2001 onwards. The UK household purchases and the UK household expenditure spreadsheets include statistics from 1974 onwards. These spreadsheets are updated annually when a new edition of the ‘Family Food’ report is published.

The ‘purchases’ spreadsheets give the average quantity of food and drink purchased per person per week for each food and drink category. The ‘nutrient intake’ spreadsheets give the average nutrient intake (eg energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, minerals and vitamins) from food and drink per person per day. The ‘expenditure’ spreadsheets give the average amount spent in pence per person per week on each type of food and drink. Several different breakdowns are provided in addition to the UK averages including figures by region, income, household composition and characteristics of the household reference person.

This time series includes annual statistics for farm business income, net farm income and cash income. These are the three main measures of farm income that come from the Farm Business Survey. The figures are broken down by the main types of farm (eg cereals, dairy, specialist pigs).
