This dataset represents ethnic group (19 tick-box level) by economic activity status and by occupation, for England and Wales combined. The census data are also broken down by age and by sex for each subtopic.

The ethnic group that the person completing the census feels they belong to. This could be based on their culture, family background, identity, or physical appearance. Respondents could choose one out of 19 tick-box response categories, including write-in response options.

Total counts for some population groups may not match between published tables. This is to protect the confidentiality of individuals' data. Population counts have been rounded to the nearest 5 and any counts below 10 are suppressed, this is signified by a 'c' in the data tables.

This dataset shows population counts for usual residents aged between 16 to 64 years old only. This is to focus on ethnic groups differences among the working age. Population counts in these tables may be different from other publications which use different age breakdowns.

"Asian Welsh" and "Black Welsh" ethnic groups were included on the census questionnaire in Wales only, these categories were new for 2021.

Life-history interviews with black immigrants born before 1911 focusing on family life, community and work experience in England and Wales before 1918. These estimates are not comparable to Department of Education figures on highest level of attainment because they include qualifications obtained outside England and Wales.

_General health _

A person's assessment of the general state of their health from very good to very bad. This assessment is not based on a person's health over any specified period of time.

_Disability _

The definition of disability used in the 2021 Census is aligned with the definition of disability under the Equality Act (2010). A person is considered disabled if they self-report having a physical or mental health condition or illness that has lasted or is expected to last 12 months or more, and that this reduces their ability to carry out day-to-day activities.

Unpaid care

An unpaid carer may look after, give help or support to anyone who has long-term physical or mental ill-health conditions, illness or problems related to old age. This does not include any activities as part of paid employment. This help can be within or outside of the carer's household.

Experimental statistics for population estimates by ethnic group broken down into age and sex at a national regional level for England and Wales.

This measures percentage point differences in the proportions of each Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) group of young people on youth justice disposals against the proportions of each BME group in the equivalent local population. BME main groups are classified as those main groups in the 2001 census. The ONS latest mid-year estimated figures used for the local youth population by BME group. It is important to do the analysis by each of the ethnic groups and not the overall BME group, otherwise the under-represented groups counter-balance the over-represented groups – giving the false impression there is no over-representation of particular BME groups. Areas would only need to submit values for the number of offenders in each ethnic group, as the local population data would be sourced from ONS to do the required calculations. Young people are those aged 10-17 years.

The aims of the project were to conduct a systematic research on the labour market position of the minority ethnic groups in the United Kingdom; to compare the inter- and intra-generational experience of the minority ethnic groups in the British labour market both amongst themselves and between these groups and the white British population; to assess the extent and the nature of 'ethnic penalty', particularly as experienced by 'second generation' minority ethnic citizens; and to provide evidence for the debate between human capital and social capital theories on ethnic disadvantages and for policy-making. The project utilised data from the General Household Survey (GHS) and Labour Force Survey (LFS) series (held at the UK Data Archive under GNs 33090 and 33246 respectively). Key variables were standardised over time, using the GHS from 1972 and the LFS from 1983, and variables covering ethnicity, generation status, age, marital status, educational qualifications, employment status, class, earnings from the labour market, number of children in family unit, and hours of work were used. A set of 18 derived variables were produced, which are included in this dataset. For further details of methodology, see documentation. For the second edition (June 2008), an updated version of the data file was deposited. The new file includes GHS 2005 data and two new variables covering source (LFS/GHS), and age respondent left full-time education. The documentation is unchanged. This dataset contains two distinct sets of data. One shows School Pupils Black and Minority Ethnicity (BME), and the other one shows School Pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Both show the Number and Percentage of current and main pupils on the roll of Schools in Lincolnshire at a given point in the year, and include Gender breakouts. Pupils are allocated to geographical areas (such as Wards and NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups) based on home address. BME includes pupils not either White British, White English, White Welsh, White Scottish or White Cornish. EAL refers to pupils for whom first language has been specified and is other than English. (Pupils where language information has not been provided are not counted as EAL, eg. where parents have exercised their right to refuse to provide the information). Figures shown in the data as ‘Out of County’ represent pupils not resident within the Lincolnshire administrative boundary. Those are included in the Lincolnshire total. Data is suppressed where appropriate 5 persons and below (which may be shown as zero or by missing data). That and any unmatched postcodes may mean numbers for small areas might not add up exactly to figures shown for larger areas. Data is from the Schools Census and shows a snapshot in January.
