    Description

    We estimate the effect of early child development on maternal labor force participation. Mothers of poorly developing children may remain at home to care for their children. Alternatively, mothers may enter the labor force to pay for additional educational and health resources. Which action dominates is the empirical question we answer in this paper. We control for the potential endogeneity of child development by using an instrumental variables approach, uniquely exploiting exogenous variation in child development associated with child handedness. We find that a one unit increase in poor child development decreases maternal labor force participation by approximately 10 percentage points. (JEL J13, J16, J22)

    Introduction: Child mental health is known to be influenced by parental work hours. Although literature suggests that parent-child interaction mediates the association, few studies have directly measured the parental time of returning home from work. We analyzed data from a school-based survey to examine the association between parental time of returning home from work and child mental health.Methods: We used a sample of 2,987 first-year primary school students derived from the Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) study that examined the impact of family environment and lifestyle on child health in Adachi City, Tokyo, Japan. We analyzed the associations between reported parental time of returning home and the continuous Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) scores using multivariable regression modeling.Results: Children whose parents both returned home late (later than 6 p.m. for the mother and later than 8 p.m. for the father), or at irregular times, had higher scores in total difficulties (β = 1.20, 95% CI: 0.55 to 1.85), the “conduct problems” subscale (β = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.13 to 0.60), and the hyperactivity/inattention subscale (β = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.24 to 0.82) compared with children whose parents both returned home earlier. Mediation analyses indicated that the percentage of the total association between parental time of returning home and the SDQ scores, which was mediated by parent-child interaction, was 20% (95% CI: 10 to 46) for total difficulties, 17% (95% CI: 7 to 49) for conduct problems, and 23% (95% CI: 11 to 52) for hyperactivity/inattention.Conclusions: Late or irregular returning home times for both parents had an adverse effect on child mental health, and the relationship was partly mediated by reduced frequency of parent-child interaction.

    NOTE: This dataset replaces a previous one. Please see below. Chicago residents who are up to date with COVID-19 vaccines by ZIP Code, based on the reported home address and age group of the person vaccinated, as provided by the medical provider in the Illinois Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange (I-CARE). “Up to date” refers to individuals who meet the CDC’s updated COVID-19 vaccination criteria based on their age and prior vaccination history. For surveillance purposes, up to date is defined based on the following criteria: People ages 5 years and older: · Are up to date when they receive 1+ doses of a COVID-19 vaccine during the current season. Children ages 6 months to 4 years: · Children who have received at least two prior COVID-19 vaccine doses are up to date when they receive one additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine during the current season, regardless of vaccine product. · Children who have received only one prior COVID-19 vaccine dose are up to date when they receive one additional dose of the current season's Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or two additional doses of the current season's Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. · Children who have never received a COVID-19 vaccination are up to date when they receive either two doses of the current season's Moderna vaccine or three doses of the current season's Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. This dataset takes the place of a previous dataset, which covers doses administered from December 15, 2020 through September 13, 2023 and is marked as historical: - https://data.cityofchicago.org/Health-Human-Services/COVID-19-Vaccinations-by-ZIP-Code/553k-3xzc. Data Notes: Weekly cumulative totals of people up to date are shown for each combination ZIP Code and age group. Note there are rows where age group is "All ages" so care should be taken when summing rows. Coverage percentages are calculated based on the cumulative number of people in each ZIP Code and age group who are considered up to date as of the week ending date divided by the estimated number of people in that subgroup. Population counts are obtained from the 2020 U.S. Decennial Census. For ZIP Codes mostly outside Chicago, coverage percentages are not calculated reliable Chicago-only population counts are not available. Actual counts may exceed population estimates and lead to coverage estimates that are greater than 100%, especially in smaller ZIP Codes with smaller populations. Additionally, the medical provider may report a work address or incorrect home address for the person receiving the vaccination, which may lead to over- or underestimation of vaccination coverage by geography. All coverage percentages are capped at 99%. Weekly cumulative counts and coverage percentages are reported from the week ending Saturday, September 16, 2023 onward through the Saturday prior to the dataset being updated. All data are provisional and subject to change. Information is updated as additional details are received and it is, in fact, very common for recent dates to be incomplete and to be updated as time goes on. At any given time, this dataset reflects data currently known to CDPH. Numbers in this dataset may differ from other public sources due to when data are reported and how City of Chicago boundaries are defined. The Chicago Department of Public Health uses the most complete data available to estimate COVID-19 vaccination coverage among Chicagoans, but there are several limitations that impact our estimates. Individuals may receive vaccinations that are not recorded in the Illinois immunization registry, I-CARE, such as those administered in another state, causing underestimation of the number individuals who are up to date. Inconsistencies in records of separate doses administered to the same person, such as slight variations in dates of birth, can result in duplicate records for a person and underestimate the number of people who are up to date.     The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a household survey carried out monthly by Statistics Canada. Since its inception in 1945, the objectives of the LFS have been to divide the working-age population into three mutually exclusive classifications - employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force - and to provide descriptive and explanatory data on each of these categories. Data from the survey provide information on major labour market trends such as shifts in employment across industrial sectors, hours worked, labour force participation and unemployment rates, employment including the self-employed, full and part-time employment, and unemployment. It publishes monthly standard labour market indicators such as the unemployment rate, the employment rate and the participation rate. The LFS is a major source of information on the personal characteristics of the working-age population, including age, sex, marital status, educational attainment, and family characteristics. Employment estimates include detailed breakdowns by demographic characteristics, industry and occupation,job tenure, and usual and actual hours worked. This dataset is designed to provide the user with historical information from the Labour Force Survey. The tables included are monthly and annual, with some dating back to 1976. Most tables are available by province as well as nationally. Demographic, industry, occupation and other indicators are presented in tables derived from the LFS data. The information generated by the survey has expanded considerably over the years with a major redesign of the survey content in 1976 and again in 1997, and provides a rich and detailed picture of the Canadian labour market. Some changes to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) were introduced which affect data back to 1987. There are three reasons for this revision: The revision enables the use of improved population benchmarks in the LFS estimation process. These improved benchmarks provide better information on the number of non-permanent residents. There are changes to the data for the public and private sectors from 1987 to 1999. In the past, the data on the public and private sectors for this period were based on an old definition of the public sector. The revised data better reflects the current public sector definition, and therefore result in a longer time series for analysis. The geographic coding of several small Census Agglomerations (CA) has been updated historically from 1996 urban centre boundaries to 2001 CA boundaries. This affects data from January 1987 to December 2004. It is important to note that the changes to almost all estimates are very minor, with the exception of the public sector series and some associated industries from 1987 to 1999. Rates of unemployment, employment and participation are essentially unchanged, as are all key labour mark et trends. The article titled Improvements in 2006 to the LFS (also under the LFS Documentation button) provides an overview of the effect of these changes on the estimates. The seasonally-adjusted tables have been revised back three years (beginning with January 2004) based on the latest seasonal output.

    Thanks to the 3,015 residents for their participation, the third year's results are in on a survey the City of Minneapolis conducted to understand how Minneapolis residents use computers, mobile devices and the Internet. Access to computers and the Internet, along with the skills to use these tools is critical as technology becomes more and more a part of our daily lives and is integrated in our economic, educational, health, and workforce systems. The results will inform priorities for the City’s digital inclusion initiatives, and help engage businesses, neighborhood and community groups, public sector partners, and funders to more effectively address community technology and economic development needs. In addition, the survey provides data to measure changes in the community over time.

    The City of Minneapolis Information Technology Department contracted with National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) to conduct a survey of residents to inform the City’s efforts to overcome the digital equity gap between individuals and groups in their access to and use and knowledge of information and communication technologies.     "The Statistical Abstract is the nation's best known and most popular single source of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the country. The print version has been published since 1878, and a compact disc version has been available since 1993. Both are designed to serve as a convenient, easy-to-use statistical reference source and guide to statistical publications and sources. The extensive selection of statistics is provided for the United States, with selected d ata for regions, divisions, states, metropolitan areas, cities, and foreign countries from reports and records of government and private agencies. Software on the disc can be used to perform full-text searches, view official statistics, open tables as Lotus worksheets or Excel workbooks, and link directly to source agencies and organizations for supporting information. The disc contains over 1,500 tables from over 250 different governmental, private, and international organizations. Some of the topics are population; vital statistics; health and nutrition; education; law enforcement, courts and prison; geography and environment; elections; state and local government; federal government finances and employment; national defense and veterans affairs; social insurance and human services; labor force, employment, and earnings; income, expenditures, and wealth; prices; business enterprise; science and technology; agriculture; natural resources; energy; construction and housing; manufactures; domestic trade and services; transportation; information and communication; banking, finance, and insurance; arts, entertainment, and recreation; accommodation, food services, and other services; foreign commerce and aid; outlying areas; and comparative international statistics. Significant changes in the 2002 data include new data from the 2000 census and new tables that include data covering resident population's migration status, educational attainment, disability status, ancestry, place of birth, and language spoken at home as well as househol d income, poverty, and selected housing characteristics from the sample portion of the 2000 census. New tables cover topics such as unmarried households, state children's health insurance programs, limitation of activity level caused by chronic conditions, characteristics of homeschooled children, firearm-use offenders, home- based work and flexible work by workers, computer use in the workplace, employee benefits, and computer and Internet use." Note to Users: This CD is part of a collection located in the Data Archive of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection is located in Room 10, Manning Hall. Users may check the CDs out subscribing to the honor system. Items can be checked out for a period of two weeks.     The People and Nature Survey for England is one of the main sources of data and statistics on how people experience and think about the environment. It began collecting data in April 2020 and has been collecting data since.

    The survey builds on the Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment (MENE) survey which ran from 2009 to 2019. Data from the People and Nature Survey for England enables users to:

    • understand how people use, enjoy, and are motivated to protect the natural environment
    • monitor changes in use of the natural environment over time, at a range of different spatial scales and for key groups within the population
    • understand how being in the natural environment can influence wellbeing
    • understand environmental attitudes and the actions people take at home, in the garden and in the wider community to protect the environment

    This data contributes to Natural England’s delivery of statutory duties, informs Defra policy and natural capital accounting, and contributes to the outcome indicator framework for the 25 Year Environment Plan.

    Different versions of the People and Nature Survey for England are available from the UK Data Archive under Open Access (SN 9092) conditions, End User Licence (SN 9093), and Secure Access (SN 9094).

    The Secure Access version includes the same data as the End User Licence version, but includes more detailed variables including:

    • age as a continuous variable
    • sex
    • whether gender is the same as at birth
    • sexual orientation
    • more detailed ethnicity
    • where journey to recent visit to green and natural space started from
    • visit date
    • detailed home geography, including local authority districts, local nature recovery strategies areas, national character areas; urban/rural area, and Index of Multiple Deprivation
    • a number of variables that have not been top-coded, including number of children and number of children in household, food and drink expenditure, and income

    The Open Access version includes the same data as the End User Licence version, but does not include the following variables:

    • age band
    • gender identity
    • marital status
    • number of children living in household
    • number of children
    • work status
    • student working status
    • income
    • qualification
    • ethnicity and consent to answer ethnicity question
    • number of vehicles
    • presence of dog in household

    The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) collects information on how people living in the United States spend their time. Data collected in this study measured the amount of time that people spent doing various activities in 2006, such as paid work, child care, religious activities, volunteering, and socializing. Respondents were interviewed only once about how they spent their time on the previous day, where they were, and whom they were with. An Eating and Health (EH) module was introduced in January 2006, which included questions related to eating, meal preparation, and health, all of which were asked after completion of the ATUS questions. Part 1, Respondent and Activity Summary File, contains demographic information about respondents and a summary of the total number of minutes they spent doing each activity that day. Part 2, Roster File, contains information about household members and nonhousehold children under the age of 18. Part 3, Activity File, includes additional information on activities in which respondents participated, including the location of each activity and the total time spent on secondary child care. Part 4, Who File, includes data on who was present during each activity. Part 5, ATUS-CPS 2006 File, contains data on respondents and members of their household collected during their participation in the Current Population Survey (CPS). Parts 6 and 7 correspond to the 2006 Eating and Health (EH) Module. Parts 8-12 contain supplemental data files that can be used for further analysis of the data. Part 8, Case History File, contains information about the interview process. Part 9, Call History File, gives information about each call attempt. Part 10, Trips File, provides information about the number, duration, and purpose of overnight trips away from home for two or more nights in a row in a given reference month. Parts 11 and 12 contain base weights, replicate base weights, and replicate final weights for each case that was selected to be interviewed for the ATUS. Demographic variables include sex, age, race, ethnicity, education level, income, employment status, occupation, citizenship status, country of origin, and household composition.

    Description

    The publication provides detailed geographical counts, at Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) and Scottish Data Zone level, of the number of families and children in families in receipt of tax credits, as at 31 August 2017. It provides a breakdown by the type of tax credits received, as well as whether the family was benefiting from help with their childcare costs and the National Indicator 118 estimate.

    Introductory note

    The tables in this release show the number of families benefiting from Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Working Tax Credit (WTC) in each LSOA or Data Zone and the number of children in these families. The tables include out of work families with children who receive the same level of support as provided by CTC, but where it is paid as child allowances in Income Support or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.

    CTC and WTC are awards for tax years, but the entitlement level can vary over the year as families’ circumstances change. These tables are based on families’ entitlements at 31 August 2017, given the family size, hours worked, childcare costs and disabilities at that date, and their latest reported incomes. This date was selected because it is the reference date for published Child Benefit statistics - including, for England and Wales, at LSOA level and for Scotland at Data Zone level.

    This data and similar geographical statistics, down to Lower Layer Super Output Area in England and Wales, Data Zones in Scotland and Output Areas in Northern Ireland, may also be available from the following sites:

Data accuracyStatistics Canada is committed to protect the privacy of all Canadians and the confidentiality of the data they provide to us. As part of this commitment, some population counts of geographic areas are adjusted in order to ensure confidentiality. Counts of the total population are rounded to a base of 5 for any dissemination block having a population less than 15. Population counts for all standard geographic areas above the dissemination block level are derived by summing the adjusted dissemination block counts. The adjustment of dissemination block counts is controlled to ensure that the population counts for dissemination areas will always be within 5 of the actual values. The adjustment has no impact on the population counts of census divisions and large census subdivisions.     This dataset, prepared by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, comprises 2 percent of the cases in the second release of CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1990 UNITED STATES: PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE: 5-PERCENT SAMPLE (ICPSR 9952).     This dataset presents data on family and community available from the ABS Data by Region statistics. This release of Data by Region presents various data for 2011-2018 and Census of Population and Housing data for 2011 and 2016 and is based on the Local Government Area (LGA) 2019 boundaries. The dataset includes information in the following specified areas of family and community: Gifts/Donations Reported by Taxpayers, Method of Travel to Work, Households, Families, Count of All Children in Family, Social Marital Status & Registered Marital Status, Unpaid Work, Access to Internet at Home, Housing Suitability, Dwelling Structure, Tenure Type, Rent and Mortgage Payments, Housing Stress, Commuting to Work and Socio Economic Indexes of Areas (SEIFA). Data by Region contains a standard set of data for each region type, depending on the availability of statistics for particular geographies. Data are sourced from a wide variety of collections, both ABS and non-ABS. When analysing these statistics, care needs to be taken as time periods, definitions, methodologies, scope and coverage can differ across collections. Where available, data have been presented as a time series - to enable users to assess changes over time. However, when looked at on a period to period basis, some series may sometimes appear volatile.     Description

    This table includes national statistics on income statements, balance sheet figures and staff of enterprises and groups of enterprises with main activity hospital care, mental residential health care, care for the disabled, nursing home care, home care, residential care for other persons and youth care. The target population consists of enterprises and groups of enterprises in the following classes of the Standard Industrial Classification 2008 (SIC 2008): 86101 University hospitals; 86102 General hospitals; 86103 Specialised hospitals (not mental); 86104 Mental health hospitals; 8720 and 87301 Care for disabled persons; 8710, 87302 and 88101 Residential and home care; 87902 Social assistance with residential care for other persons; 87901 Social assistance with residential and day care for children; 88991 Social work for children.

    From 2015 onwards the population has been altered significantly by including privately financed health care and micro enterprises. Only limited information is published about micro enterprises, but it adds to a complete description of the targeted health care classifications of SIC 2008. Furthermore SIC 86222 Practices of psychiatrists and day-care centres for social health has now been removed from the population as it will be published in statistics of care practices rather than institutions.

    In 2020 healthcare professionals received a 1 000 euros net bonus for Covid19 efforts. This was provided by the Ministry of Health to the healthcare providers, which in their turn payed their own employees including their self-employed and temporary workers. The gross amount of this payment by the ministry to the healthcare providers is recorded as 'Subsidies'. The payment of the bonus including tax payment is recorded as 'Labour costs' and the payments to temporary workers as 'Other personnel costs'. In 2021 healthcare professionals received a 385 euros net bonus for Covid19 efforts.

    Changes as of February 28th 2025: Provisional figures for 2023 were published for 'Social work for children', 'Social assistance with residential and day care for children' and 'Residential care for other persons'. The same figures for 2022 were updated to definitive figures.

    When will new figures be published? In the last quarter of 2025 provisional figures for 2024 will be published except for 'Social work for children', 'Social assistance with residential and day care for children' and 'Residential care for other persons'. In the first quarter of 2026 provisional figures for 2024 will be published for 'Social work for children', 'Social assistance with residential and day care for children' and 'Residential care for other persons'.

Description

We estimate the effect of early child development on maternal labor force participation. Mothers of poorly developing children may remain at home to care for their children. Alternatively, mothers may enter the labor force to pay for additional educational and health resources. Which action dominates is the empirical question we answer in this paper. We control for the potential endogeneity of child development by using an instrumental variables approach, uniquely exploiting exogenous variation in child development associated with child handedness. We find that a one unit increase in poor child development decreases maternal labor force participation by approximately 10 percentage points. (JEL J13, J16, J22)
