    Description

The share of cash at points-of-sale was estimated to be around 10 percent, although this is based on a limited amount of information. No data exists on the actual use of cash money, outside of survey diaries. To that end, the numbers shown here are estimations based on the available data regarding cash withdrawals and payment transactions, and assume that consumers who withdraw cash money are likely to spend this in a physical store. As not all payment data is readily available, like the use of OTC or over-the-counter cash withdrawals, note this can still mean that the cash share numbers provided here are not necessarily accurate. In the case of the United States, figures are less publicly available than for, for example, European countries, as especially the ATM cash withdrawals is not measured often. One of the reasons the figures provided here look relatively old is because some of its measurements stem a three-year annual survey. Instead, the country does focus a lot more on data covering "noncash" payments.

    Description

When converted to the value of one US dollar in 2020, goods and services that cost one dollar in 1700 would cost just over 63 dollars in 2020, this means that one dollar in 1700 was worth approximately 63 times more than it is today. This data can be used to calculate how much goods and services from the years shown would cost today, by multiplying the price from then by the number shown in the graph. For example, an item that cost 50 dollars in 1970 would theoretically cost 335.5 US dollars in 2020 (50 x 6.71 = 335.5), although it is important to remember that the prices of individual goods and services inflate at different rates than currency, therefore this graph must only be used as a guide.

    Description

The euro and U.S. dollar made up more than seven of 10 SWIFT payments worldwide in 2024, outperforming many other currencies. This is according to a monthly report meant to track the market share of China's yuan renminbi within the international bank transfer system SWIFT. Although China holds the largest forex reserves in the world, the yuan ranked as the eighth-used currency in international payments. The figures concern customer-initiated and institutional payments and exclude trade. Discussions on the potential weakening role of the U.S. dollar especially touch world trade and forex. For example, the share of the USD in forex reserves declined visibly against the euro and Japanese yen in 2023. What sparked this de-dollarization trend, and will it continue? Trade sanctions and de-dollarization De-dollarization in 2023 is mentioned mostly alongside trade and the BRICS countries - an informal name given to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The combined GDP of BRICS is about 25 percent of the world's economy. After the start of the Ukraine war and Russia received economic sanctions, the BRICS slowly evolved into a trading bloc. The group increasingly wanted its own currency to settle payments within the trade bloc, to avoid using the U.S. dollar. In August 2023, BRICS will gather in South Africa to discuss the creation of such a new joint currency. Additionally, 19 countries - including Argentina, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Yemen - expressed interest in joining the BRICS group. CBDC, or projects into a digital payment settlement A factor of future uncertainty for the U.S. dollar is how central bank digital currencies (CBDC) develop in emerging countries. Several projects exist between individual countries that specifically target cross-border interbank payments. A cooperation between Thailand and Hong Kong, Inthanon-Lionrock, ranks as the most advanced of these projects. CBDC does not require the U.S. dollar to function. Tangible such as commodities or gold can back them. The value of transactions processed with CBDC is to grow by 260,000 percent between 2023 and 2030.

    Description

In 2024, 62 percent of adults in the United States invested in the stock market. This figure has remained steady over the last few years, and is still below the levels before the Great Recession, when it peaked in 2007 at 65 percent. What is the stock market? The stock market can be defined as a group of stock exchanges, where investors can buy shares in a publicly traded company. In more recent years, it is estimated an increasing number of Americans are using neobrokers, making stock trading more accessible to investors. Other investments A significant number of people think stocks and bonds are the safest investments, while others point to real estate, gold, bonds, or a savings account. Since witnessing the significant one-day losses in the stock market during the Financial Crisis, many investors were turning towards these alternatives in hopes for more stability, particularly for investments with longer maturities. This could explain the decrease in this statistic since 2007. Nevertheless, some speculators enjoy chasing the short-run fluctuations, and others see value in choosing particular stocks.

    Description

Cash usage by country varied significantly — even within Europe — according to various payment diary studies held all over the world. The numbers provided here all stem from domestically held payment diary surveys, where consumers had to record how often and by how much they used certain payment methods. In the Euro area, for instance, Malta led the group of countries in proportion of cash to non-cash transactions in 2021, with 77 percent of all transactions carried out in cash. Other Mediterranean countries also saw high cash transaction rates. This contrasted with Canada and the United States, where their surveys suggested a far lower market share of cash. Cash usage is a relatively new field of Payments research Tracking the use of paper money or coins for most countries only began in the mid to late 2010s, and was especially adopted following the coronavirus pandemic. Central banks increasingly wanted to map out whether cash was declining in favor of digital payment methods, but no official means of tracking cash use was available. As this is based on domestically held surveys, data availability and data frequency varies significantly. This overview tries to collect all research done so far. It should be noted that all surveys are conducted separately from one another, so they might not be comparable. Another less reliable, but more easily available way to calculate the share of cash in a country is currency in circulation or CIC. This is a comparatively easy figure to research and calculate, but experts question its reliability. Digital payments expected to keep on growing Cashless payments are forecast to double between 2022 and 2027. Over 1.1 trillion non-cash transactions were carried out in the world, with the highest number being recorded in Asia-Pacific. The number of cashless payments in Asia-Pacific is forecast to be higher than transactions in Europe and North America combined. A significant growth in Latin America — consisting of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia in this particular ranking — is also expected, as they continue to implement real-time payments across the region.

To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the gender classifications (biological sex) reported by the US Census Bureau. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Cash by gender, including both male and female populations. This dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Cash across both sexes and to determine which sex constitutes the majority.

    Key observations

There is a majority of male population, with 57.81% of total population being male. Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.

    Content

When available, the data consists of estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.

    Scope of gender :

Please note that American Community Survey asks a question about the respondents current sex, but not about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. The question is intended to capture data for biological sex, not gender. Respondents are supposed to respond with the answer as either of Male or Female. Our research and this dataset mirrors the data reported as Male and Female for gender distribution analysis. No further analysis is done on the data reported from the Census Bureau.

    Variables / Data Columns

    • Gender: This column displays the Gender (Male / Female)
    • Population: The population of the gender in the Cash is shown in this column.
    • % of Total Population: This column displays the percentage distribution of each gender as a proportion of Cash total population. Please note that the sum of all percentages may not equal one due to rounding of values.

    Good to know

    Margin of Error

Data in the dataset are based on the estimates and are subject to sampling variability and thus a margin of error. Neilsberg Research recommends using caution when presening these estimates in your research.

    Description

The U.S. dollar was the most common currency in foreign exchange reserves in 2023, comprising more than three times the amount of the euro in global reserves that year. This total peaked in 2015, partly due to the strength of the dollar during the Eurozone crisis. The share of the U.S. dollar has lost since to the Japanese yen and euro, as well as other currencies. Why do foreign exchange reserves matter? When countries with different currencies export goods, they must agree on a currency for payment. As a result, countries hold currency reserves worth trillions of U.S. dollars. After World War II, the U.S. dollar itself became the international currency in the Bretton Woods Agreement and is thus the most common currency for international payments. The United States Treasury is also seen by most as risk-free, giving the country a low-risk premium. For this reason, countries hold U.S. dollars in reserve because the currency holds value relatively well eventually. China and currency reserves Since 2016, the International Monetary Fund has included the Chinese renminbi (yuan) as part of the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) basket. This decision recognized the influence of the renminbi as a reserve currency, particularly in several Asian countries. China also holds significant foreign exchange reserves itself, funded by its large positive trade balance.
