    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     Context

    The dataset tabulates the United States population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for United States. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of United States by age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group in United States.

    Key observations

    The largest age group in United States was for the group of age 30 to 34 years years with a population of 23.06 million (6.94%), according to the ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. At the same time, the smallest age group in United States was the 80 to 84 years years with a population of 6.34 million (1.91%).     In 2023, Washington, D.C. had the highest population density in the United States, with 11,130.69 people per square mile. As a whole, there were about 94.83 residents per square mile in the U.S., and Alaska was the state with the lowest population density, with 1.29 residents per square mile.     The United States MSA Boundaries data set contains the boundaries for metropolitan statistical areas in the United States. The data set contains information on location, identification, and size. The database includes metropolitan boundaries within all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The general concept of a metropolitan area (MA) is one of a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities that have a high degree of economic and social integration with that nucleus. Some MAs are defined around two or more nuclei. Each MA must contain either a place with a minimum population of 50,000 or a U.S. Census Bureau-defined urbanized area and a total MA population of at least 100,000 (75,000 in New England). An MA contains one or more central counties. An MA also may include one or more outlying counties that have close economic and social relationships with the central county. An outlying county must have a specified level of commuting to the central counties and also must meet certain standards regarding metropolitan character, such as population density, urban population, and population growth. In New England, MAs consist of groupings of cities and towns rather than whole counties. The territory, population, and housing units in MAs are referred to as "metropolitan." The metropolitan category is subdivided into "inside central city" and "outside central city." The territory, population, and housing units located outside territory designated "metropolitan" are referred to as "non-metropolitan." The metropolitan and non-metropolitan classification cuts across the other hierarchies; for example, generally there are both urban and rural territory within both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.

    Description

    This data set contains observations of dead or alive harbor porpoises made by the public, mostly around the Swedish coast. A few observations are from Norwegian, Danish, Finish and German waters. Each observation of harbor porpoise is verified at the Swedish Museum of Natural History before it is approved and published on the web. The verification consists of controlling the accuracy of number of animals sighted, if the coordinates are correct and if pictures are attached that they really show a porpoise and not another species. If any of these three seem unlikely, the reporter is contacted and asked more detailed questions. The report is approved or denied depending on the answers given. Pictures and movies that can’t be uploaded to the database due to size problems are saved at the museum server and marked with the identification number given by the database. By the end of the year the data is submitted to HELCOM who then summarize all the member state’s data from the Baltic proper to the Kattegat basin. The porpoise is one of the smallest tooth whales in the world and the only whale species that breeds in Swedish waters. They are to be found in temperate water in the northern hemisphere where they live in small groups of 1-3 individuals. The females give birth to a calf in the summer months which then suckles for about 10 months before it is left on its own and she has a new calf. The porpoises around Sweden are divided in to three groups that don’t mix very often. The North Sea population is found on the west coast in Skagerrak down to the Falkenberg area. The Belt Sea population is to be found a bit north of Falkenberg down to Blekinge archipelago in the Baltic. The Baltic proper population is the smallest population and consists only of a few hundred animals and is considered as an endangered sub species. They are most commonly found from the Blekinge archipelago up to Åland Sea with a hot spot area south of Gotland at Hoburg’s bank and the Mid-Sea bank. The Porpoise Observation Database was started in 2005 at the request of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to get a better understanding of where to find porpoises with the idea to use the public to expand the “survey area”. The first year 26 sightings were reported, where 4 was from the Baltic Sea. The museum is particularly interested in sightings from the Baltic Sea due to the low numbers of animals and lack of data and knowledge about this group. In the beginning only live sightings were reported but later also found dead animals were added. Some of the animals that are reported dead are collected. Depending on where it is found and its state of decay, the animal can be subsampled in the field. A piece of blubber and some teeth are then send in by mail and stored in the Environmental Specimen Bank at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. If the whole animal is collected an autopsy is performed at the National Veterinary Institute in Uppsala to try and determine cause of death. Organs, teeth and parasites are sampled and saved at the Environmental Specimen Bank as well. Information about the animal i.e. location, founding date, sex, age, length, weight, blubber thickness as well as type of organ and the amount that is sampled is then added to the Specimen Bank database. If there is an interest in getting samples or data from the Specimen Bank, one have to send in an application to the Department of Environmental research and monitoring and state the purpose of the study and the amount of samples needed.

    We developed a model for analyzing multi-year demographic data for long-lived animals and used data from a population of Agassiz’s desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) at the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area in the western Mojave Desert of California, USA, as a case study. The study area was 7.77 square kilometers and included two locations: inside and outside the fenced boundary. The wildlife-permeable, protective fence was designed to prevent entry from vehicle users and sheep grazing. We collected mark-recapture data from 1,123 tortoises during 7 annual surveys consisting of two censuses each over a 34-year period. We used a Bayesian modeling framework to develop a multistate Jolly-Seber model because of its ability to handle unobserved (latent) states and modified this model to incorporate the additional data from non-survey years. For this model we incorporated 3 size-age states (juvenile, immature, adult), sex (female, male), two location states (inside and outside the fenced boundary) and 3 survival states (not-yet-entered, entered/alive, and dead/removed). We calculated population densities and estimated probabilities of growth of the tortoises from one size-age state to a larger size-age state, survival after 1 year and 5 years, and detection. Our results show a declining population with low estimates for survival after 1 year and 5 years. The probability for tortoises to move from outside to inside the boundary fence was greater than for tortoises to move from inside the fence to outside. The probability for detecting tortoises differed by size-age state and was lowest for the smallest tortoises and highest for the adult tortoises. The framework for the model can be used to analyze other animal populations where vital rates are expected to vary depending on multiple individual states. The model was incorporated into the manuscript that included several other databases for publication in Wildlife Monographs in 2020 by Berry et al.

    Description

    The library patronage indicator measures the percentage of the total resident population served by each public library (the percentage of eligible residents that holds an unexpired library card). Ten public libraries and public library districts in Champaign County are included: the Champaign Public Library, the Homer Community Library, the Mahomet Public Library District, the Ogden Rose Public Library, the Philo Public Library District, the Rantoul Public Library, the St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library, the Sidney Community Library, the Tolono Public Library District, and the Urbana Free Library. Public libraries often serve as community hubs and offer a number of educational and social opportunities and services for their population served. Registration for and maintenance of a library card is one way a resident can engage in recreation and other community involvement.

    In 2021, five of the ten libraries analyzed had residential participation rates between 20 and 30 percent: Champaign Public Library, 27.57 percent; St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library, 25.12 percent; Mahomet Public Library District, 22.38 percent; Tolono Public Library District, 21.82 percent; and the Philo Public Library District, 21.3 percent.

    The libraries with the greatest percentage of the resident population with unexpired library cards were the Homer Community Library, at 38.96 percent, and the Urbana Free Library at 30 percent. The libraries with the smallest percentage of the resident population with unexpired library cards were the Sidney Community Library, 18.13 percent; Rantoul Public Library, 17.22 percent; and the Ogden Rose Public Library, at 13.85 percent.

    All ten public libraries in Champaign County saw the percentage of their resident population with unexpired library cards decrease between 2015 and 2021. It is worth noting that many library buildings were closed during part of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that along with statewide stay-at-home orders may have deterred residents from renewing or obtaining library cards.

    The release of the 2020 Census results in 2021 shows that the population in eight of the ten library districts decreased from 2010 to 2020. It is important to note that the population of a library district sometimes differs than the population of the municipality where it is located (e.g., Tolono).

    The two library districts that saw a population increase in 2020 were the Champaign Public Library and Tolono Public Library District. However, the number of unexpired library cards in those districts decreased in 2021, so the decrease in the percentage of the population with library cards cannot be explained by population growth.

    The two library districts that saw an increase in the percentage of the population with library cards from 2020 to 2021 are the Homer Community Library and Urbana Free Library. The number of unexpired library cards at the Homer Community Library increased from 2020 to 2021, which explains the percentage increase. However, the number of unexpired library cards at the Urbana Free Library decreased from 2020 to 2021, so the percentage increase is due to the library district’s population decrease.

    Data was sourced from the Illinois Public Library Annual Report (IPLAR), an annual report from the Illinois State Library and Office of the Illinois Secretary of State. The population data included in the IPLAR dataset is sourced from the 2020 Census. To be consistent with the data source, we have also calculated the percentage of residents with library cards based on the number of cardholders divided by the total 2020 Census population.

    The 2023 cartographic boundary shapefiles are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas are together termed Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) and are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of the county or counties or equivalent entities associated with at least one urban core of at least 10,000 population, plus adjacent counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured through commuting ties with the counties containing the core. Categories of CBSAs are: Metropolitan Statistical Areas, based on urban areas of 50,000 or more population; and Micropolitan Statistical Areas, based on urban areas of at least 10,000 population but less than 50,000 population. The generalized boundaries in this file are based on those defined by OMB based on the 2020 Census and published in 2023.

    This Religion and State-Minorities (RASM) dataset is supplemental to the Religion and State Round 2 (RAS2) dataset. It codes the RAS religious discrimination variable using the minority as the unit of analysis (RAS2 uses a country as the unit of analysis and, is a general measure of all discrimination in the country). RASM codes religious discrimination by governments against all 566 minorities in 175 countries which make a minimum population cut off. Any religious minority which is at least 0.25 percent of the population or has a population of at least 500,000 (in countries with populations of 200 million or more) are included. The dataset also includes all Christian minorities in Muslim countries and all Muslim minorities in Christian countries for a total of 597 minorities. The data cover 1990 to 2008 with yearly codings.

    These religious discrimination variables are designed to examine restrictions the government places on the practice of religion by minority religious groups. It is important to clarify two points. First, these variables focus on restrictions on minority religions. Restrictions that apply to all religions are not coded in this set of variables. This is because the act of restricting or regulating the religious practices of minorities is qualitatively different from restricting or regulating all religions. Second, this set of variables focuses only on restrictions of the practice of religion itself or on religious institutions and does not include other types of restrictions on religious minorities. The reasoning behind this is that there is much more likely to be a religious motivation for restrictions on the practice of religion than there is for political, economic, or cultural restrictions on a religious minority. These secular types of restrictions, while potentially motivated by religion, also can be due to other reasons. That political, economic, and cultural restrictions are often placed on ethnic minorities who share the same religion and the majority group in their state is proof of this.

    This set of variables is essentially a list of specific types of religious restrictions which a government may place on some or all minority religions. These variables are identical to those included in the RAS2 dataset, save that one is not included because it focuses on foreign missionaries and this set of variables focuses on minorities living in the country. Each of the items in this category is coded on the following scale:

    0. The activity is not restricted or the government does not engage in this practice.
    1. The activity is restricted slightly or sporadically or the government engages in a mild form of this practice or a severe form sporadically.
    2. The activity is significantly restricted or the government engages in this activity often and on a large scale.

    A composite version combining the variables to create a measure of religious discrimination against minority religions which ranges from 0 to 48 also is included.

    ARDA Note: This file was revised on October 6, 2017. At the PIs request, we removed the variable reporting on the minority's percentage of a country's population after finding inconsistencies with the reported values. Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Context

The dataset tabulates the United States population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for United States. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of United States by age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group in United States.

Key observations

The largest age group in United States was for the group of age 30 to 34 years years with a population of 23.06 million (6.94%), according to the ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. At the same time, the smallest age group in United States was the 80 to 84 years years with a population of 6.34 million (1.91%).
