    Description

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner. The first Labour Force Survey (LFS) in the United Kingdom was conducted in 1973, under the terms of a Regulation derived from the Treaty of Rome. The provision of information for the Statistical Office of the European Communities (SOEC) continued to be one of the reasons for carrying out the survey on an annual basis. SOEC co-ordinated information from labour force surveys in the member states in order to assist the EC in such matters as the allocation of the Social Fund. The survey was carried out biennially from 1973 to 1983 and was increasingly used by UK government departments to obtain information which would assist in the framing of social and economic policy. By 1983 it was being used by the Employment Department (now the Department for Work and Pensions) to obtain information which was not available from other sources or was only available for Census years. From 1984 the survey was carried out annually, and since that time the LFS has consisted of two elements:a quarterly survey conducted in Great Britain throughout the year, in which each sampled address was called on five times at quarterly intervals, and which yielded about 15,000 responding households in every quartera `boost' survey in the spring quarter (March-May), which produced interviews at over 44,000 households in Great Britain and over 4,000 households in Northern IrelandUsers should note that only the data from the spring quarter and the 'boost' survey were included in the annual datasets for public release, and that only data from 1975-1991 are available from the UK Data Archive. The depositor recommends only considered use of data for 1975 and 1977 (SNs 1757 and 1758), as the concepts behind the definitions of economic activity changed and are not comparable with later years. Also the survey methodology was being developed at the time and so the estimates may not be reliable enough to use. During 1991 the survey was developed, so that from spring 1992 the data were made available quarterly, with a quarterly sample size approximately equivalent to that of the previous annual data. The Quarterly Labour Force Survey series therefore superseded the annual LFS series, and is held at the Data Archive under GN 33246. Main Topics:The basic set of LFS questions sought information about household composition: i.e. for each usually resident individual member of the household, the relationship to the head of the household, sex, age, marital condition and nationality. For persons above the statutory school-leaving age information was sought about the main economic activity, any secondary economic activity, and economic activity one year previously. For unemployed persons questions were asked about the type of employment sought, duration of unemployment and method of seeking employment, previous employment status and industry and whether or not registered as unemployed at an official employment office. In 1977 the European Community's supplementary set of questions sought information about persons neither working nor seeking work, and about the receipt of various kinds of pensions Questions asked in the surveys at the request of UK departments included occupation in the main economic activity, occupation in any secondary activity, occupation one year previously and last occupation of persons not in employment: and extra questions about migration. In 1977 questions were asked about qualifications, whether or not registered as disabled, and the type of National Insurance contributions paid by married women. Stratified multi-stage sample; for further details see annual reports. Until 1983 two sampling frames were used; in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, the Valuation Roll provided the basis for a sample which, in England and Wales, included all 69 metropolitan districts, and a two-stage selection from among the remaining non-metropolitan districts. In Northern Ireland wards were the primary sampling units. In Scotland, the Address File (i.e. post codes) was used as the basis for a stratified sample. From 1983 the Postoffice Address File has been used instead of the Valuation Roll in England and Wales. In 1984 sample rotation was introduced along with a panel element, the quarterly survey, which uses a two-stage clustered sample design.

    Description

The Swedish income panel was originally set up in the beginning of the 90s to make studies of how immigrants assimilate in the Swedish labour market possible. It consists of large samples of foreign-born and Swedish-born persons. Income information from registers is added for nearly 40 years. In addition income information relating to spouses is also available as well as for a subset of mothers and fathers. This makes it possible to construct measures of household income based on a relatively narrow definition. However, starting in 1998 there is also more information making it possible to include children over 18 and their incomes in the family. By matching with some different additional registers information has been added for people who have been unemployed or involved in labour market programmes during the 90s, on causes of deaths for people who have deceased since 1978 and on recent arrived immigrants from various origins. It has turned out that the data-base is quite useful for analysing research-questions other than originally motivating construction of the panel. The panel has been used for cross country comparisons of immigrants in the labour market and to analyse income mobility for different breakdowns of the population, and analyses the development in cohort income. There have been analyses of social assistance receipt among immigrants as well as studies of intergeneration mobility of income, the labour market situation of young immigrants and the second generation of immigrants. On-going work includes evaluation of labour market training programmes and studies of early retirement among immigrants. Planned work includes studies of the economic transition from child to adulthood during the 80s and 90s as well as studies of how frequent immigrant children are subject to measures under the Social Service Act and the Care of Youth Persons Act. The potentials of the Swedish Income Panel can be understood if one compares it with better known income-panels in other countries. For example SWIP covers more years and has a larger sample than the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). On the other hand, the fact that information is obtained from registers only makes this Swedish panel less rich in variables. There are striking parallels between the Gothenburg Income Panel and the labour market panel at the Centre for Labour Market and Social Research in Aarhus for the Danish population.

    Description

In 1977 a new law called 'Act on Co-determination' came into force in Sweden. According to this law trade unions have the right to be informed about all circumstances that are, or could be, of importance for the members of the union. The unions have the right to express their opinions on almost every important question at 'the establishment'. This is allowed for in a special type of negotiation. An employer has after negotiations however the right to make a decision without bothering about the union's opinion. This law is supposed to regulate the unions rights to participate in the decision making process at the establishment. It is an important part of the complex system of formal norms that regulates the relations between trade unions and employers in Sweden. The research project 'Work, Unions and participation' studied how local actors - unions and employers - have adapted to this system of norms. This study is composed of two survey studies, designed as a panel study. The population is restricted to following branches: manufacturing, trade, transports and communications, education, social welfare and public health. The sample size is about 500 establishments, which means 25% of the population. Two types of questionnaires were sent to respondents at these places of work. One was sent to the local leadership, which was usually answered by the local manager or an equivalent person, one questionnaire was sent to each of the trade unions which were active at the place of work.

    Description

The study was a comprehensive analysis of felonious killings of officers. The purposes of the study were (1) to analyze the nature and circumstances of incidents of felonious police killings and (2) to analyze trends in the numbers and rates of killings across different types of agencies and to explain these differences. For Part 1, Incident-Level Data, an incident-level database was created to capture all incidents involving the death of a police officer from 1983 through 1992. Data on officers and incidents were collected from the Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) data collection as coded by the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. In addition to the UCR data, the Police Foundation also coded information from the LEOKA narratives that are not part of the computerized LEOKA database from the FBI. For Part 2, Agency-Level Data, the researchers created an agency-level database to research systematic differences among rates at which law enforcement officers had been feloniously killed from 1977 through 1992. The investigators focused on the 56 largest law enforcement agencies because of the availability of data for explanatory variables. Variables in Part 1 include year of killing, involvement of other officers, if the officer was killed with his/her own weapon, circumstances of the killing, location of fatal wounds, distance between officer and offender, if the victim was wearing body armor, if different officers were killed in the same incident, if the officer was in uniform, actions of the killer and of the officer at entry and final stage, if the killer was visible at first, if the officer thought the killer was a felon suspect, if the officer was shot at entry, and circumstances at anticipation, entry, and final stages. Demographic variables for Part 1 include victim's sex, age, race, type of assignment, rank, years of experience, agency, population group, and if the officer was working a security job. Part 2 contains variables describing the general municipal environment, such as whether the agency is located in the South, level of poverty according to a poverty index, population density, percent of population that was Hispanic or Black, and population aged 15-34 years old. Variables capturing the crime environment include the violent crime rate, property crime rate, and a gun-related crime index. Lastly, variables on the environment of the police agencies include violent and property crime arrests per 1,000 sworn officers, percentage of officers injured in assaults, and number of sworn officers.

Major changes to the dataset with version 2 (see below for full description of dataset): - Data files have been separated into 'drift1' (October 2019-July 2020) and 'drift2' (August-September 2020) to highlight the spatial discontinuity in measurement sites. - Precipitation data is now provided for June 18 - July 31 of drift 1 and drift 2. - The code recipes for producing merged datasets were found to be infeasible to run on systems with limited random access memory (RAM). The code (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14633302) has been reorganized and a minutely-averaged version of the Advanced RISC Machine (ARM) ship-based radiation data is provided for convenience. - Ship-based radiation data has been updated to level b1 and now includes downwelling longwave data. Please see the methods (addendum 1) for a summary of the differences in downwelling radiation: Full description of the dataset: - The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) produced a wealth of observational data along the drift of the R/V Polarstern in the Arctic Ocean from October 2019 to September 2020. These data can further process-level understanding and improvements in models. However, the observational records contain temporal gaps and are provided in different formats. One goal of the MOSAiC Model Forcing Dataset Working Group (MMFDWG: https://mosaic-expedition.org/science/cross-cutting_groups/) is to provide consistently-formatted, gap-filled, merged datasets representing the conditions at the MOSAiC Central Observatory (the intensively studied region within a few km of R/V Polarstern) that are suitable for driving models on this spatial domain (e.g., single column models, large eddy simulations, etc). The MSCMWG is an open group, please contact the dataset creators if you would like to contribute to future versions of these merged datasets (including new variables). - This dataset contains version 2 of these merged datasets, and comprises the variables necessary to force a single column ice model (e.g., Icepack: https://zenodo.org/doi/10.5281/zenodo.1213462). The atmospheric variables are primarily derived from Met City (https://doi.org/10.18739/A2PV6B83F), with temporal gaps filled by bias and advection corrected data from Atmospheric Surface Flux Stations ( https://doi.org/10.18739/A2XD0R00S, https://doi.org/10.18739/A25X25F0P, https://doi.org/10.18739/A2FF3M18K). Some residual gaps in shortwave radiation were filled with ARM ship-board radiometer data. See addendum 2 in the methods for a summary of the data sources for atmospheric data. - The MOSAiC expedition drifted with two distinct sets of drifting ice floes. 'drift1' began in October 2019 north of the Laptev Sea and ended in July 2020 in the Fram Strait. 'drift2' was from August to September 2020 in the vicinity of the North Pole. Distinct files are provided for drift1 and drift2. - Three different options for snowfall precipitation rate (prsn) for drift 1 are provided, based on in-situ observations that precipitation greatly exceeded accumulation on level ice, and accumulation rates varied on different ice types. See methods for a description of the different precipitation rates. Besides precipitation, the other atmospheric variables for these files are identical. - Oceanic variables are in MOSAiC_ocn* files and are derived from https://doi.org/10.18739/A21J9790B. Data format: The data are netCDF files formatted according to the Merged Data File format (https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2023-2413, https://gitlab.com/mdf-makers/mdf-toolkit). Code availability: The code 'recipes' that were used to produce these data are available at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14633302. References: If you use these datasets, please also cite the appropriate publications: - Meteorological variables (excluding precipitation): Cox et al., 2023 (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02415-5) - Oceanographic variables: Schulz et al., 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.2023.00114) - Ka-band ARM Zenith Radar (KAZR)-derived precipitation: Matrosov et al., 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.2021.00101) - Accumulation-derived pseudo-precipitation: Raphael et al., 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.2023.00040). - Summertime precipitation: Smith et al., 2024 (https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2024-1977) Known issues: The following are known issues that will be addressed in future dataset releases: 1. Residual gaps occupy approximately 7% of the data record (see addendum) 2. Measurement Data Format (MDF) format does not currently include a field for point-by-point data source 3. There is no precipitation data for the leg 3-4 crew transition (May 15 - June 19).

    Description

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Additional information and referenced materials can be found: http://hdl.handle.net/10217/83444 The importance of disturbance intensity and herbivory by cattle and white grubs, or the larvae of June beetles to recovery of shortgrass steppe ecosystems in Colorado, USA were evaluated over a 14 year time period. Disturbance intensity was defined by survival of the dominant grass species (Bouteloua gracilis) after an outbreak of root feeding activity by white grubs. 16 patches of vegetation consisting of four pairs of adjacent ungrazed-grazed by cattle locations with 2 replicates that were recently affected by white grubs were selected in 1977. Disturbance intensity was determined in 1977 by the area in each patch that contained live tillers of B. gracilis. Permanent plots were lcoated both within and outside of each patch. Plant basal cover and density by species were estimated at time of peak aboveground biomass in 6 different years on each plot. Successional dynamics on patches was similar to areas affected by other types of disturbances, however, rate of recovery was faster for patches affected by grubs. Grazing by cattle was infrequently important to plant recovery, a result similar to effects of grazing on other aspects of shortgrass steppe. Disturbance intensity was important to recovery of B. gracilis since tiller survival in 1977 was linearly related to cover in each year of sampling. For ungrazed patches, initial conditions were important to recovery of B. gracilis for as many as 14 years. For grazed patches, initial conditions decreased and grazing increased in importance through time. Changes in resource quality and more uniform distribution of roots due to grazing likely resulted in more complete mortality of plants by grubs under grazed compared to ungrazed conditions. Persistance of shortgrass steppe ecosystems in spite of disturbances with different intensities are determined at least in part by characteristics of disturbances interacting with the ability ofplants to respond, and in part by the evolutionary history of the system. Although white grubs affect shortgrass communities infrequently, they have large and important effects on plant community structure through time, and represent an important class of disturbance defined by intensity.
