This population dataset complements 13 other datasets as part of a study that compared ancient settlement patterns with modern environmental conditions in the Jazira region of Syria. This study examined settlement distribution and density patterns over the past five millennia using archaeological survey reports and French 1930s 1:200,000 scale maps to locate and map archaeological sites. An archaeological site dataset was created and compared to and modelled with soil, geology, terrain (contour), surface and subsurface hydrology and normal and dry year precipitation pattern datasets; there are also three spreadsheet datasets providing 1963 precipitation and temperature readings collected at three locations in the region. The environmental datasets were created to account for ancient and modern population subsistence activities, which comprise barley and wheat farming and livestock grazing. These environmental datasets were subsequently modelled with the archaeological site dataset, as well as, land use and population density datasets for the Jazira region. Ancient trade routes were also mapped and factored into the model, and a comparison was made to ascertain if there was a correlation between ancient and modern settlement patterns and environmental conditions; the latter influencing subsistence activities. Creation of this population dataset, derived from a 1961 census, was created to compare modern population density patterns with the distribution of ancient settlement patterns to ascertain if patterns are shared. There is a similarity between these patterns with higher concentrations of settlements and population along the banks of rivers until reaching the northern area of the Jazira where both extend across the wider landscape and away from rivers. Derived from 1:1 million scale map produced for the following report: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations. Etude des Ressources en Eaux Souterraines de la Jezireh Syrienne. Rome: FAO, 1966.Population map was copied to mylar and scanned to create a polygon coverage of the soil classes, which include land-use attribute information. This database represents a collection of osteological and biochemical information from two Imperial-era skeletal collections (Casal Bertone and Castellaccio Europarco) from Rome. Data collection was accomplished between 2007-2009. In the database, you will find basic demographic information (age and sex), an inventory of each skeleton, measurements, skeletal pathology data, records of teeth examined and their pathological conditions, and results of all biochemical analyses undertaken to date (C, N, O, Sr, Pb isotopes; Pb and Sr concentration). No information on the archaeological context of the skeletons (e.g., provenience, grave goods, etc.) is included in this database, as that information is the purview of the Archaeological Superintendency of Rome. I'm suggesting a CC BY-NC-SA license for these data -- that is, feel free to use the data as you see fit for your academic publications; I just ask that you credit me appropriately. For a synthesis of data from different sites, citation is fine. If you're interested in analyzing unpublished data, like dental pathology, I would appreciate co-authorship. Roman Catholic Churches are Christian Churches that are subject to the papal authority in Rome. In addition to what are commonly thought of as Roman Catholic Churches, this data set also includes Newman (or Neumann) Centers and Chaldean Churches. Newman Centers are Roman Catholic Churches setup specifically to serve college or university populations. The Chaldean Church (also known as the Chaldean Church of Babylon) reunited with the Catholic Church in the 15th century. It originated in the Middle East. If a group of Roman Catholics gather for organized worship at a location that also serves another function, such as a school, these locations are included in this dataset if they otherwise meet the criteria for inclusion. Roman Catholic Shrines are included if they hold regularly scheduled mass. If a congregation celebrates mass at multiple locations, we have tried to include all such locations. This dataset excludes churches that are not subject to papal authority in Rome. Some churches may refer to themselves as "Catholic", and yet not be part of the "Roman" Catholic Church and these Churches are excluded from this dataset. Specifically Protestant Churches and their descendants which separated from the Roman Catholic Church beginning in 1517, Eastern Orthodox Churches (e.g. Russian, Greek) which separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1054, and Episcopalian (Church of England in America) which separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534 are excluded. The 22 "Eastern Catholic autonomous particular churches", with the exception of the Chaldean Church, are also excluded. These are Churches which are in full communion with the Pope in Rome, but which practice their own rites which are different from the Western or Latin Roman Catholic Church. This dataset excludes rectories. Private homes, even if they are used for formal worship, are excluded from this dataset. Locations that are only used for administrative purposes are also excluded. This dataset also includes original TGS research. All data is non license restricted data. TGS has ceased making phone calls to verify information about religious locations.
