    Description

Abstract (en): Detailed tabulations of international and domestic finance data are presented in this data collection. These time series data summarize each country's balance of payments, with collateral data on major financial components such as trade and reserves, and data on exchange rates, international liquidity, money and banking, international transactions, prices, production, government finance, and interest rates. A subset of these data, containing annual data from 1948 to 1978, is available as well. 196 countries and geographical areas. (1)The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has notified ICPSR that it will not renew ICPSR's INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL STATISTICS (IFS) (ICPSR 7629) monthly tape subscription effective November 1, 1991. This action coincides with IMF's decision to begin distributing this series to individuals on CD-ROM. As a result ICPSR will not be able to update these data on a monthly basis. The IFS data for the 1948 through July, 1991 period will continue to be available from ICPSR\; this is the last version of the data received under our former subscription. Efforts will continue to renew the monthly subscription with IMF and users will be notified when such efforts are successful. (2) The data are stored in packed zoned decimal format. A COBOL processing program is available for use with this dataset. (3) Each time series can contain a variable number of logical records. The exact number of records in any time series in this collection is dependent upon the availability of annual, quarterly, and monthly data. Approximately 23,000 time series are included in the collection. (4) The term "country," as used in this dataset, does not in all cases refer to a territorial entity which is a state as understood by international law and practice. The term also covers some territorial entities that are not states but for which statistical data are maintained and provided internationally on a separate and independent basis. (5) Exchange rates are expressed in United States dollars per national currency unit or vice versa, and two rates are given for the special drawing right (SDR) value of the national currency unit. (6) One codebook now documents these four IMF studies: DIRECTION OF TRADE (ICPSR 7628), INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL STATISTICS (ICPSR 7629), BALANCE OF PAYMENTS STATISTICS (ICPSR 8623), and GOVERNMENT FINANCE STATISTICS (ICPSR 8624). (7) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.

    Description

PLEASE NOTE. It is advised to use ds633.0, ERA5 Reanalysis (0.25 Degree Latitude-Longitude Grid) [https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds633-0/].

ECMWF has announced that the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has begun the release of the ERA5 back extension data covering the period 1950-1978 on the Climate Data Store (CDS).

Although in many other respects the quality of this dataset is quite satisfactory, the current back extension appears to suffer from tropical cyclones that are sometimes unrealistically intense. This is in contrast with the ERA5 product from 1979 onwards (also available from the CDS and RDA ds633.0). For this reason the current release of the back extension is preliminary.

It is therefore available from separate CDS catalogue entries (hourly, monthly, single level and pressure levels), and this RDA dataset. Around the end of 2021 an updated version of the back extension is to be made available which will be added to the ERA5 catalogue entries that currently reach back to 1979. After an overlap period (the duration of which is not yet decided), the preliminary back extension will be deprecated.

The full back extension preliminary dataset is expected to be made available near the end of 2020/early 2021.

After many years of research and technical preparation, the production of a new ECMWF climate reanalysis to replace ERA-Interim is in progress. ERA5 is the fifth generation of ECMWF atmospheric reanalyses of the global climate, which started with the FGGE reanalyses produced in the 1980s, followed by ERA-15, ERA-40 and most recently ERA-Interim. ERA5 will cover the period January 1950 to near real time.

ERA5 is produced using high-resolution forecasts (HRES) at 31 kilometer resolution (one fourth the spatial resolution of the operational model) and a 62 kilometer resolution ten member 4D-Var ensemble of data assimilation (EDA) in CY41r2 of ECMWF's Integrated Forecast System (IFS) with 137 hybrid sigma-pressure (model) levels in the vertical, up to a top level of 0.01 hPa. Atmospheric data on these levels are interpolated to 37 pressure levels (the same levels as in ERA-Interim). Surface or single level data are also available, containing 2D parameters such as precipitation, 2 meter temperature, top of atmosphere radiation and vertical integrals over the entire atmosphere. The IFS is coupled to a soil model, the parameters of which are also designated as surface parameters, and an ocean wave model. Generally, the data is available at an hourly frequency and consists of analyses and short (12 hour) forecasts, initialized twice daily from analyses at 06 and 18 UTC. Most analyses parameters are also available from the forecasts. There are a number of forecast parameters, e.g. mean rates and accumulations, that are not available from the analyses.

Improvements to ERA5, compared to ERA-Interim, include use of HadISST.2, reprocessed ECMWF climate data records (CDR), and implementation of RTTOV11 radiative transfer. Variational bias corrections have not only been applied to satellite radiances, but also ozone retrievals, aircraft observations, surface pressure, and radiosonde profiles.

DECS produces a CF 1.6 compliant netCDF-4/HDF5 version of ERA5 for the CISL RDA at NCAR. The netCDF-4/HDF5 version is the de facto RDA ERA5 online data format. The GRIB1 data format is also available online. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the netCDF-4/HDF5 and GRIB1 files, with as much GRIB1 metadata as possible incorporated into the attributes of the netCDF-4/HDF5 counterpart.

    Description

ERA5-Land is a reanalysis dataset providing a consistent view of the evolution of land variables over several decades at an enhanced resolution compared to ERA5. ERA5-Land has been produced by replaying the land component of the ECMWF ERA5 climate reanalysis. Reanalysis combines model data with observations from across the world into a globally complete and consistent dataset using the laws of physics. Reanalysis produces data that goes several decades back in time, providing an accurate description of the climate of the past. ERA5-Land uses as input to control the simulated land fields ERA5 atmospheric variables, such as air temperature and air humidity. This is called the atmospheric forcing. Without the constraint of the atmospheric forcing, the model-based estimates can rapidly deviate from reality. Therefore, while observations are not directly used in the production of ERA5-Land, they have an indirect influence through the atmospheric forcing used to run the simulation. In addition, the input air temperature, air humidity and pressure used to run ERA5-Land are corrected to account for the altitude difference between the grid of the forcing and the higher resolution grid of ERA5-Land. This correction is called 'lapse rate correction'.
The ERA5-Land dataset, as any other simulation, provides estimates which have some degree of uncertainty. Numerical models can only provide a more or less accurate representation of the real physical processes governing different components of the Earth System. In general, the uncertainty of model estimates grows as we go back in time, because the number of observations available to create a good quality atmospheric forcing is lower. ERA5-land parameter fields can currently be used in combination with the uncertainty of the equivalent ERA5 fields. The temporal and spatial resolutions of ERA5-Land makes this dataset very useful for all kind of land surface applications such as flood or drought forecasting. The temporal and spatial resolution of this dataset, the period covered in time, as well as the fixed grid used for the data distribution at any period enables decisions makers, businesses and individuals to access and use more accurate information on land states.

Note: April 22, 2025: Updates to "CHN by income and HH size_v3".

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: April 16, 2025: Updates to the following files have been made on April 9th and 16th: "CHN by income and HH size_v2", "cd_hh_projections_v2", "csd_hh_projections_v2", and "CMAs_all data_v3".

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: March 31, 2025 files "Data_Element_1a" & "...1b" updated to v3 to include additional geographies (CDs and PTs) in the calculation of households close to rail transit.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: This dataset as of March 31st, 2025 now contains data on all 12 data elements, including core housing need among "gender diverse" households (formerly called "2SLGBTQ+" households) in table "Data_Element_ 3".

That table (i.e. Data_Element_3) now also includes core housing need data on those priority populations reported in HART's HNA Tool. Two other outputs were migrated from that HNA Tool into this Federal HNA Template dataset:

    • Income Categories and Affordable Shelter Costs, Percentage of Households in Core Housing Need by Income Category and Household Size, and 2021 Affordable Housing Deficit. (HICC Section 3.6), and
    • Projected Households by Household Size and Income Category (HICC Section 6.1.1)

This Borealis dataset has been updated accordingly to include that data:

    • "AMHI.csv" (2021 AMHI and dollar ranges of income and shelter cost categories)
    • "cd_hh_projections.csv" (Projected households in 2031 for CDs)
    • "csd_hh_projections.csv" (Projected households in 2031 for CSDs)
    • "CHN by income and HH size.csv" (2021 core housing need by income and household size)

The geographical scope of the dataset has also been expanded. Before March 31st, only CSDs were included. As of March 31st, data on CDs, provinces/territories, the country of Canada, and CMA/CAs has been added. Not all data is available for all geographies:

    • Data from CMHC's Rental Market Survey and Starts and Completions Survey are reported at the CSD level within CMAs/CAs. Results for provinces/territories/Canada are reported, but data for CDs is not. Since these surveys may not include all CSDs within a given CD, we have not attempted to aggregate this CSD data into CDs.
    • Data from any custom census order by HART does not include CMA/CAs. We are able to aggregate the data by CSD into CMA/CAs, but all income and shelter cost data had been categorized based on the AMHI of the CSD as part of the original order (i.e. whether a household is "Very Low" income or "Low" income depends on the median household income of the CSD that the household lives in). This will lead to some inaccuracy and ambiguity of interpretation for the income or shelter cost data reported for CMAs.
    • Data on "gender diverse" households is only available from Statistics Canada for geographies with a population count greater than 50,000 as of the 2021 census. This represents a total of 239 geographies (incl. Canada and the provinces/territories). Due to the low number of CSDs with this data, we have not attempted to aggregated this to the CMA/CA level.

Data for CMAs/CAs will be added to the tool by mid-April 2025, but the source data has been summarized and included in this dataset:

    • "CMAs_all data.csv" (All available data for CMAs and CAs)

Update (March 14, 2025): Tables "Data_Element_1a" and "...1b" have been updated to exclude some non-rail rapid transit stops that were erroneous included, notably in Winnipeg.

    Housing Assessment Resource Tools (HART)

This database was created to accompany the dashboard on HART's website called the "Federal Housing Needs Assessment Template." URL: https://hart.ubc.ca/federal-hna-template/.

This dashboard presents housing-related data to help communities complete the Housing Needs Assessment template requested by the Government of Canada as a requirement for certain funding applications. For more information on that template, please visit the Government of Canada's website (https://housing-infrastructure.canada.ca/housing-logement/hna-ebml/template-modele-eng.html).

This dataset represents the underlying data used to populate HART's dashboard. The data contains some public and custom data from Canada's Census of Population (author: Statistics Canada), public data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) regarding it's Rental Market Survey as well as it's Starts and Completions Survey, private data from the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada, and data created by Licker Geospatial Consulting Co. specifically for this dashboard. Due to the variety of sources, the dataset is not complete for every CSD.

The full list of data elements, their sources, and any methodological considerations can be found in the attached file "Federal-HNA-Template-Methodology.pdf".

The other attached files have been named to correspond with the Data Elements listed in the methodology document on page 2. Each file contains data on all available geographies. Some files will have a letter after he number (i.e. "1a" and "1b") if there was more than one data table associated with a given data element. Some data will not be available until March 14, 2025, namely elements 3, 5, and 11.

    Data Elements:

    1. Counts and percentages of households within 800m and 200m of rail/light-rail transit station (applies only to municipalities with 2021 population of 30,000+, excluding BC and Quebec) (HICC Section 3.1.1)
    2. Changes to headship rates 2016-2021 & Household Suppression by age of Primary household maintainer following the Province of British Columbia’s HNR methodology (HICC Section 3.3)
    3. (Part 2, March 14) Provide priority groups by core housing need status (Youth age 18-29, 2SLGBTQ+, People dealing with mental health and addictions issues, Veterans) (HICC Section 4.1)
    4. Number of secondary rental units (HICC Section 5.2.1)
    5. (Part 2, March 14) The number of affordable units for low and very low-income households built, and the number lost (HICC Section 5.3)
    6. Change in Average rents (HICC Section 5.4)
    7. Change in Vacancy rates (HICC Section 5.5)
    8. Changes in core housing need over time in both tenant and owner-occupied households (HICC Section 5.6)
    9. Number of housing units that are subsidized (HICC Section 5.7.1)
    10. Number of housing units that are below market rent in the private market (HICC Section 5.7.1)
    11. (Part 2, March 14th) Number of co-operative housing units (HICC Section 5.7.1)
    12. Housing starts by structural type and tenure (HICC Section 5.9.2)

Each "Data_Element_#" file has the geography indicated as a geocode of a certain length. Provinces and territories have 2 digits (e.g. 10), census divisions have 4 digits (e.g. 1011), census subdivisions have 7 digits (e.g. 1011001), and census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations have a 3 digit geocode (e.g. 001). This geocode is drawn from the latest edition of Statistics Canada's Standard Geographical Classification (SCG) which provides standard names and codes for the geographical regions of Canada.

Each geocode may have multiple rows of data associated with it. For example, in the file Data_Element_6 each geography has three rows:

    1. % Change in Avg Rent,
    2. Avg Monthly Rent, and
    3. Change in Avg Rent.
