    Description

This statistic shows the ten U.S. states in soybean production from 2019 to 2024. Illinois topped the list in 2024, with almost 688 million bushels produced that year. Soybean industry Soybeans are among the major agricultural crops planted in the United States, behind only corn. They belong to the oilseed crops category and most U.S. soybeans are planted in May and early June and are harvested in late September and October. Production practices show that U.S. farmers commonly grow soybeans in crop rotation with corn. More than 80 percent of soybeans are cultivated in the upper Midwest. The Unites States counted Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota as their leading soybean producing states as of 2022. Historical data shows that large-scale soybean production did not begin until the 20th century in the United States. However, recent statistics illustrate that the acreage of the dominant oilseed crop has expanded rapidly. The expansion of soybean acreage was favored by several factors including low production costs and a greater number of 50-50 corn-soybean rotations. Furthermore, soybeans were one of the first crop types that achieved commercial success as bioengineered crops. The first genetically modified (GM) soybeans were planted in the United States in 1996. They possess a gene that confers herbicide resistance. The usage of soybeans ranges from the animal food industry over human consumption to non-food products. The highest percentage of soybeans goes to the animal feed industry. The products intended for human consumption include products such as soy milk, soy flour or tofu.

Market Dynamics of Soybean Seed Market

Key Drivers for Soybean Seed Market

The Rising Global Demand for Soy-Derived Products to Boost Market Growth

The market for soybean seeds is expanding due in large part to the rising demand for items made from soy. In many culinary and non-food items, such as soy milk, tofu, soy protein isolates, and soy oil, soybeans are an essential component. The usage of soy-based substitutes for dairy and animal products is increasing due to the growing popularity of plant-based diets, which are being driven by customers who are concerned about their health and the environment. Additionally, soymeal is a major source of animal feed for the expanding cattle industry. Soybeans' adaptability in industrial uses and biofuel generation further enhances their allure. Farmers are being encouraged by this strong demand to use premium soybean seeds in order to increase output and successfully satisfy market demands.

Expansion of Livestock and Poultry Farming to Drive Market Growth

The rise of the soybean seed market is largely driven by the increase in livestock and poultry farming. Soy is the main source of high-quality protein in animal feed, especially soymeal, for the well-being and productivity of cattle and poultry. As the world's meat consumption keeps rising, there is a growing need for feed made from soybeans. Animal husbandry is expanding quickly in emerging economies because of their expanding populations and rising incomes, which increases demand for soybeans. Farmers are spending more money on pest-resistant and high-yield soybean seeds in order to satisfy the demands of the feed sector and guarantee a steady supply and quality. This pattern helps the global soybean seed market to continue growing steadily.

Restraint Factor for the Soybean Seed Market

High Costs of Genetically Modified (GM) Seeds Will Limit Market Growth

The market expansion for soybean seeds is severely hampered by the high price of genetically modified (GM) seeds. Due to the need for intensive research and development, genetically modified seeds that provide characteristics like insect and herbicide resistance are more expensive. GM seeds are too expensive for many small-scale and resource-constrained farmers, especially in developing nations, which restricts their uptake. Furthermore, GM seeds frequently need supplementary inputs, such as certain pesticides, which raises agricultural costs even more. The financial burden is further increased for farmers by issues with intellectual property restrictions and licensing agreements. This expense barrier prevents broad adoption, which affects the market for soybean seeds' potential for overall growth.

Impact of Covid-19 on the Soybean Seed Market

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect on the soybean seed industry by interfering with supply chains, postponing farming activities, and influencing seed distribution. Logistical difficulties brought on by lockdowns and transit limitations made it difficult for farmers to obtain premium seeds during crucial planting seasons. Agriculture-related labor shortages made matters worse, especially in areas where manual farming is ...

    Description

In 2023, exports of soybean from Brazil reached nearly 102 million metric tons, an increase of 29 percent when compared to the previous year. This is also the highest figure reported in the decade. In turn, Brazilian soybean exports were valued at approximately 53.2 billion U.S. dollars that year.

An undisputed market leader As Brazil’s annual soybean exports nearly tripled in one decade, the South American country went on to become the largest exporter of this oilseed in the world. This result is mostly associated with an increasing demand from China, the leading destination for Brazilian soybean exports. Meanwhile, global soybean meal and soybean oil exports are dominated by Brazil’s southern neighbor, Argentina. Nevertheless, the Portuguese-speaking country ranks second worldwide.

Domestic soybean demand also on a rise Parallel to a growth in international demand for this commodity, the domestic consumption of soybean in Brazil has also seen a continual rise in the past decade, estimated at more than 55.6 million metric tons in 2022/23. In the industrial sector, this oilseed is mainly associated with the biofuels segment. In 2022, more than four million cubic meters of soybean oil were used for biodiesel diesel production in Brazil, making it the leading raw material used for this purpose.

Soybean oil, a versatile vegetable oil derived from soybeans, is highly regarded for its widespread culinary and industrial applications. The process of extracting soybean oil involves several key steps, beginning with the cleaning and preparation of soybeans. The beans are then cracked, heated, and rolled into flakes before undergoing extraction through a solvent-based method, typically employing hexane. Following extraction, the oil is refined through processes such as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization to ensure its purity and quality. In terms of health and nutritional advantages, soybean oil is lauded for its favorable fatty acid profile, comprising predominantly unsaturated fats, particularly polyunsaturated fats, which are known to promote heart health. It is also a rich source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for the body. Additionally, soybean oil contains vitamin E, an antioxidant that contributes to cell protection and skin health. These nutritional attributes make it a desirable choice for cooking and food preparation. It has a wide range of uses, from cooking, where it's valued for its high smoke point and versatility, to industrial applications like biodiesel production, machinery lubrication, and manufacturing cosmetics and plastics. Soybean oil comes in different types, primarily categorized based on its fatty acid composition. The two main types are regular soybean oil, with a balanced mix of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats, and high-oleic soybean oil, which has a higher monounsaturated fat content, offering increased stability for frying.

    Key Trends:

Plant-Based Product Innovation: Manufacturers are moving beyond traditional soy milk to create soy-based yoghurts, ice creams, and cheeses. This diversification addresses the growing demand for plant-based dairy substitutes, hence increasing soy’s position in consumers’ diets.

Fortification with Vitamins and Minerals: Soy drinks are increasingly being fortified with extra nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 to improve their nutritional profile. This trend targets health-conscious consumers looking for nutrient-dense, plant-based dairy alternatives.

Clean Label and Non-GMO Products: Consumers are increasingly demanding clean-label items that are free of artificial ingredients and made from non-GMO soy. This trend reflects a general customer preference for natural, minimally processed meals with clear ingredient sourcing.

Global Cuisine Influence: The influence of global cuisines is driving the use of soy beverages in a wide range of traditional and innovative dishes. This trend is being pushed by culinary innovation and the growing popularity of plant-based eating habits around the world, which is increasing the usage of soy beverages in cooking and baking.

    Description

Foliar application of nitrogen to enhance crop productivity has been widely used. Melatonin is an effective regulator in promoting plant growth. However, the effects of melatonin and the combination of melatonin and nitrogen on soybeans yields production remain largely unknown. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of spraying leaves with melatonin and urea on soybeans. Foliar application of urea significantly increased soybean yields and melatonin did not affect the yields, while combination of melatonin and urea significantly reduced the yields compared to the application of urea alone. A leaf transcriptional profile was then carried out to reveal the underlying mechanism and found that foliar spraying of urea specifically induced the expression of genes related to amino acid transport and nitrogen metabolism. However, foliar application of melatonin significantly changed the transcriptional pattern established by urea application and increased the expression of genes related to abiotic stress signaling pathways. The effects of melatonin and urea treatment on soil microbiome were also investigated. Neither melatonin nor urea application altered the soil microbial alpha diversity, but melatonin application changed rhizosphere microbial community structure, whereas the combination of melatonin and urea did not. Melatonin or urea application altered the abundance of certain taxa. The number of taxa changed by melatonin treatment was higher than urea treatment. Collectively, our results provide new and valuable insights into the effects of foliar application of melatonin to urea and further show that melatonin exerts strong antagonistic effects on urea-induced soybean yields, gene expression and certain soil microorganisms.

In 2020, 94 percent of the soybean crops in the United States were genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant. Genetically modified crops have taken agriculture in the U.S. by storm. By comparison, only 17 percent of soybean crops were genetically modified in 1997. Other crops grown in the United States which are mostly genetically modified are cotton and corn.

Types of genetic modifications for Crops
Herbicide tolerance is one of the most common forms of genetic modification. As the name suggests, these plants are modified so that herbicides meant for weeds will not harm the plant itself, allowing for higher yields and healthier crops. Most of the cotton and corn in the United States is modified to have stacked traits. This refers to the practice of combining several different genes into a single plant.

Agricultural production in the United States
Gross farming income in the United States has seen an increase since 2000, increasing from about 242 billion U.S. dollars to 404 billion dollars in 2018. As genetically modified crops became more prevalent during that time period, the total production of soybeans in the United States also grew, amounting to approximately 4.31 billion bushels in 2018. Corn is another important crop in the United States with a variety of different uses, from human consumption to animal feed to ethanol production. Between 2000 and 2018, the area of corn for grain harvested in the U.S. increased by nearly 10 million acres.

    Description

Yield advantages in intercropping are determined by the net effects of positive (facilitative and complementarity) interactions and mitigating negative (competitive) interactions. Pigeonpea plants have both physiological and morphological attributes that may reduce interspecific competition in mixed culture. The initial slow growth of pigeonpea relative to cereals minimizes competition in intercropping systems, making pigeonpea compatible with most cereal-based systems. In semi-arid areas, however, growing seasons are increasingly becoming shorter because of low and sporadic rainfall. Consequently, yield of intercropped pigeonpea may be adversely affected by competition, if farmers do not use appropriate agronomic practices. Pigeonpea is a fairly new legume crop in Kongwa and Kiteto districts, requiring both adaptability studies and agronomy studies particularly for sustainable intensification purposes. Thus, this study is being carried out to assess the component interactions and their impacts on farm productivity in order to provide guidelines for optimizing yields of maize and pigeonpea in semi-arid climates of Central Tanzania. About the project Project title: Africa RISING Project abstract The aim of the Africa RISING project in Kongwa and Kiteto Districts, Tanzania is to provide a scientific basis for sustainably intensifying agricultural production in semi-arid areas of central Tanzania. The project activities are falls under 4 thematic areas that address three critical elements of sustainable intensification (SI), i.e. genetic, ecological and socio-economic intensification technologies. The scope of activities being implemented include: packaging of new legume and cereal varieties with over 120% yield advantage, packaging and validation of integrated productivity enhancing technologies for cereals, legumes, legume trees and soil health technologies, food safety primarily to reduce aflatoxin contamination and integration of livestock into the cropping systems. The innovation platform is used to set R4D priority in the action sites. In the 2013-2014 season, we reached out to about 1217 farmers Kongwa and Kiteto districts. In 2014 we plan to reach out to about 1500 new farmers. The project team is comprised of national partners (e.g. ARI-Hombolo, District Agricultural Officers, SUA and UDOM) and CG Partners (CIMMYT and ICRAF) under the leadership of ICRISAT. Description

The necessary replacement of fish meal with other protein source in diets of commercially important fish has prompted the study of the effect of the inclusion of different vegetable proteins sources on growth performance and on the gastro-intestinal tract. Currently, soybean meal is the primary protein source as a fish meal replacement because of its low price and high availability. Likewise, it is been documented that the ingestion of soybean meal by several fish species, such as salmonids and carp, triggers a type of intestinal inflammation called enteritis. In this paper, we analyzed the effects of the ingestion of soybean meal and two of its components, soy protein and soy saponin, on zebrafish to establish the basis for using zebrafish larvae as a model for fish nutrition. We took advantage of the existence of different transgenic lines, which allowed us to perform in vivo analysis. Our results indicated that larvae that were feed with soybean meal developed a clear intestinal inflammation as early as two day after beginning the diet. Moreover, we determined that is not the soy protein present in the diet but the soy saponin that is primarily responsible for triggering the immune response. These findings support the use of zebrafish screening assays to identify novel ingredients that would to improved current fish diets or would formulate new ones.
