The United States Virgin Islands Summary File contains data on population and housing subjects compiled from questions on the 2010 United States Virgin Islands Census questionnaire. Population subjects include age, sex, children ever born, citizenship status, foreign-born status, disability status, educational attainment, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, family type, grandparents as caregivers, group quarters population, health insurance coverage status, household type and relationship, employment status, work experience, class of worker, industry, occupation, place of work, journey to work, travel time to work, language spoken at home and ability to speak English, marital status, nativity, year of entry, place of birth, parents' place of birth, earnings, income, poverty status, residence in 2009, school enrollment, vocational training and veteran status. Housing subjects include acreage, agricultural sales, business on property, computer ownership, internet service, kitchen facilities, cooking fuel, mortgage status, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, occupancy status, occupants per room, plumbing facilities, purchase of water from water vendor, gross rent, condominium status and fee, mobile home costs, selected monthly owner costs, sewage disposal, source of water, telephone service available, tenure, units in structure, vacancy status, value of home, vehicles available, year householder moved into unit and year structure built. The data are organized in 548 tables, one variable per table cell, which are presented at up to 21 levels of observation, including the United States Virgin Islands as a whole, islands, census subdistricts, places (census designated places and towns), estates, census tracts, block groups, blocks and 5-digit ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. Altogether, 110 tables are presented at the block level and higher, 288 at the block group level and higher and 150 at the census tract level and higher. Additionally, the tables are iterated for the urban and rural geographic components of islands and 21 geographic components of the United States Virgin Islands as a whole: 15 urban components (total urban, urbanized areas, urban clusters, and urbanized areas and urban clusters of various population sizes) and 6 rural components (total rural, rural areas outside places, rural areas inside places and inside places of various population sizes). Due to problems in the initial version, the Census Bureau ultimately issued the Summary File as two data products. The first or main release comprises 50 data files with all the tables except 11 tables on selected monthly owner costs, the tables HBG66, HBG67, HBG68, HBG69, HBG70, HBG71, HBG72, HBG73, HCT19, HCT20 and HCT21. The second, supplemental release consists of a document file with the 11 tables on selected monthly owner costs. ICPSR provides each product as a separate ZIP archive. The archive with the supplemental release also includes additional technical documentation prepared by the Bureau.

After the 2020 Census, there are three key changes to the Census Bureau’s urban area concept and criteria:We increased the minimum population threshold to qualify as urban from 2,500 to 5,000, and we added an alternative: instead of qualifying based on population size, areas can now qualify based on a minimum housing unit threshold.We now use housing unit density instead of population density.We no longer distinguish between different types of urban areas.The first two changes reflect a general shift by the Census Bureau toward using housing units to measure urbanization and identify qualifying urban areas. The Census Bureau’s urban-rural classification is fundamentally a delineation of geographical areas, identifying both individual urban areas and the rural areas of the nation. The Census Bureau’s urban areas represent densely developed territory, and encompass residential, commercial, and other non-residential urban land uses. To qualify as an urban area, the territory identified according to criteria must have at least 5,000 people or 2,000 housing units. The 2020 Census changed how urban areas are determined from the 2010 criteria. The population requirement was increased to 5,000 people from 2,500 in 2010. This value is now determined by housing unit density instead of population density. Urban areas can now also be defined by the number of housing units present. Finally, the 2020 Census does not distinguish different types of urban areas. The Census Designated Places 2020 (CDP 2020) boundary usually is defined by the Census Bureau in cooperation with state, local or tribal officials. The boundaries are updated prior to each decennial census. These boundaries, which usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity boundary, have no legal status, nor do these places have officials elected to serve traditional municipal functions. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. CDPs must be contained within a single state and may not extend into an incorporated place. There are no population size requirements for CDPs. incorporatedCDP data is download from Census Bureau's TIGER 2020 website (https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2020/PLACE/) and extracted for Los Angeles County. This data includes LA County 88 incorporated cities and 54 CDPs.
This polygon shapefile contains 5-year American Community Survey estimates of housing variables (see below) at the place level released in 2012. The TIGER/Line Files are shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) that are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureaus Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line File is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The TIGER/Line Files include both incorporated places (legal entities) and census designated places or CDPs (statistical entities). An incorporated place is established to provide governmental functions for a concentration of people as opposed to a minor civil division (MCD), which generally is created to provide services or administer an area without regard, necessarily, to population. Places always nest within a State, but may extend across county and county subdivision boundaries. An incorporated place usually is a city, town, village, or borough, but can have other legal descriptions. CDPs are delineated for the decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name, but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the State in which they are located. The boundaries for CDPs often are defined in partnership with State, local, and/or tribal officials and usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity. CDP boundaries often change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern and development; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. The data provided here denotes the authors’ revised service areas for a subset of 377 Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) for which HUD previously estimated service areas. Using HUD administrative data on the location of Housing Choice Voucher holders, HUD’s estimated service areas were revised to better capture voucher activity. Specifically, the authors developed two different tests and correction procedures. The first assesses if the estimated service area omits a sizable share of voucher holder locations (so is “too small”), and if so, adjusts to include census designated places or counties containing at least 5 percent of a PHA’s voucher holders. The second test checks whether the estimated service boundary includes areas the PHA does not appear to serve and that are clearly served by another PHA (so is “too large”), in this case adjusting by removing those areas. 148 of the 377 PHA estimated service areas were found to be too small, too large, or both, and so have revised service areas that differ from HUD’s estimated service areas. The detailed methodology is provided below. Additionally, a spreadsheet is supplied that identifies geographies that were added to and dropped from HUD’s estimated services to create the revised service areas for affected PHAs.
This is an experimental dataset that is designed to aid researchers in studying the HCV program. The second test checks whether the estimated service boundary includes areas the PHA does not appear to serve and that are clearly served by another PHA (so is “too large”), in this case adjusting by removing those areas. 148 of the 377 PHA estimated service areas were found to be too small, too large, or both, and so have revised service areas that differ from HUD’s estimated service areas. The detailed methodology is provided below. Additionally, a spreadsheet is supplied that identifies geographies that were added to and dropped from HUD’s estimated services to create the revised service areas for affected PHAs.
This is an experimental dataset that is designed to aid researchers in studying the HCV program. The methodology and the service areas themselves have not been validated by HUD’s Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH) or the Public Housing Agencies. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. This feature class was created by exporting the CDP polygon features from the 2020 Census Designated Place State-based shapefile.The Current Place State-based shapefile contains a record for incorporated places, which are established to provide governmental functions for a concentration of people as opposed to a minor civil division (MCD), which generally is created to provide services or administer an area without regard, necessarily, to population. Places always nest within a state, but may extend across county and county subdivision boundaries. An incorporated place usually is a city, town, village, or borough, but can have other legal descriptions. CDPs are delineated for the decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name, but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the state in which they are located
