The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) is a multi-site longitudinal, epidemiologic study designed to examine the health of women during their middle years. The study examines the physical, biological, psychological and social changes during this transitional period. The goal of SWAN's research is to help scientists, health care providers and women learn how mid-life experiences affect health and quality of life during aging. Data were collected about doctor visits, medical conditions, medications, treatments, medical procedures, relationships, smoking, and menopause related information such as age at pre-, peri- and post-menopause, self-attitudes, feelings, and common physical problems associated with menopause. The study began in 1994. Between 2006 and 2008, 2,245 of the 3,302 women that joined SWAN were seen for their tenth follow-up visit. The research centers are located in the following communities: Ypsilanti and Inkster, MI (University of Michigan), Boston, MA (Massachusetts General Hospital), Chicago, IL (Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center), Almaeda and Contra Costa County, CA (University of California, Davis and Kaiser Permanente), Los Angeles, CA (University of California, Los Angeles), Hackensack, NJ (Hackensack University Medical Center) and Pittsburgh, PA (University of Pittsburgh). SWAN participants represent five racial/ethnic groups and a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Though the New Jersey site was still part of the study, data was not collected from this site for the tenth visit. Demographic and background information includes age, language of interview, marital status, household composition, and employment.

• Percentage-of-underweight-children-data: Percentage of children aged 5 years or below who are underweight by country.

• Prevalence of Underweight among Female Adults (Age Standardized Estimate): Percentage of female adults whos BMI is less than 18.

• GDP per capita (constant 2015 US$): GDP per capita is gross domestic product divided by midyear population. GDP is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources. Data are in constant 2015 U.S. dollars.

• Domestic general government health expenditure (% of GDP): Public expenditure on health from domestic sources as a share of the economy as measured by GDP.

• Maternal mortality ratio (modeled estimate, per 100,000 live births): Maternal mortality ratio is the number of women who die from pregnancy-related causes while pregnant or within 42 days of pregnancy termination per 100,000 live births. The data are estimated with a regression model using information on the proportion of maternal deaths among non-AIDS deaths in women ages 15-49, fertility, birth attendants, and GDP measured using purchasing power parities (PPPs).

• Mean-age-at-first-birth-of-women-aged-20-50-data: Average age at which women of age 20-50 years have their first child.

• School enrollment, secondary, female (% gross): Gross enrollment ratio is the ratio of total enrollment, regardless of age, to the population of the age group that officially corresponds to the level of education shown. Secondary education completes the provision of basic education that began at the primary level, and aims at laying the foundations for lifelong learning and human development, by offering more subject- or skill-oriented instruction using more specialized teachers.

About The Data

The data was taken from a survey of men and women in African, Asian, and South American countries, exploring the attitudes and perceived justifications given for committing acts of violence against women. The data also explores different sociodemographic groups that the respondents belong to, including: Education Level, Marital status, Employment, and Age group.

It is, therefore, critical that the countries where these views are widespread, prioritize public awareness campaigns, and access to education for women and girls, to communicate that violence against women and girls is never acceptable or justifiable.

The data comes from Statistics Sweden's population statistics (name register) and refers to persons registered in Sweden on December 31st, 2020. However, some names are excluded due to confidentiality, such as names with fewer than five carriers. The data is licensed with Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) and may be used as long as Statistics Sweden is stated as the source.
