    Description

A major challenge of our time is reducing disparities in access to and effective use of digital technologies, with recent discussions highlighting the role of AI in exacerbating the digital divide. We examine user characteristics that predict usage of the AI-powered conversational agent ChatGPT. We combine behavioral and survey data in a web tracked sample of N=1376 German citizens to investigate differences in ChatGPT activity (usage, visits, and adoption) during the first 11 months from the launch of the service (November 30, 2022). Guided by a model of technology acceptance (UTAUT-2), we examine the role of socio-demographics commonly associated with the digital divide in ChatGPT activity and explore further socio-political attributes identified via stability selection in Lasso regressions. We confirm that lower age and higher education affect ChatGPT usage, but neither gender nor income do. We find full-time employment and more children to be barriers to ChatGPT activity. Using a variety of social media was positively associated with ChatGPT activity. In terms of political variables, political knowledge and political self-efficacy as well as some political behaviors such as voting, debating political issues online and offline and political action online were all associated with ChatGPT activity, with online political debating and political self-efficacy negatively so. Finally, need for cognition and communication skills such as writing, attending meetings, or giving presentations, were also associated with ChatGPT engagement, though chairing/organizing meetings was negatively associated. Our research informs efforts to address digital disparities and promote digital literacy among underserved populations by presenting implications, recommendations, and discussions on ethical and social issues of our findings.

    Description

Within a year of its launch, ChatGPT has seen a surge in popularity. While many are drawn to its effectiveness and user-friendly interface, ChatGPT also introduces moral concerns, such as the temptation to present generated text as one’s own. This led us to theorize that personality traits such as Machiavellianism and sensation-seeking may be predictive of ChatGPT usage. We launched two online questionnaires with 2,000 respondents each, in September 2023 and March 2024, respectively. In Questionnaire 1, 22% of respondents were students, and 54% were full-time employees; 32% indicated they used ChatGPT at least weekly. Analysis of our ChatGPT Acceptance Scale revealed two factors, Effectiveness and Concerns, which correlated positively and negatively, respectively, with ChatGPT use frequency. A specific aspect of Machiavellianism (manipulation tactics) was found to predict ChatGPT usage. Questionnaire 2 was a replication of Questionnaire 1, with 21% students and 54% full-time employees, of which 43% indicated using ChatGPT weekly. In Questionnaire 2, more extensive personality scales were used. We found a moderate correlation between Machiavellianism and ChatGPT usage (r = .22) and with an opportunistic attitude towards undisclosed use (r = .30), relationships that largely remained intact after controlling for gender, age, education level, and the respondents’ country. We conclude that covert use of ChatGPT is associated with darker personality traits, something that requires further attention.

Higher Education Students' Early Perceptions of ChatGPT: Global Survey Data

    Description

The introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022 marked a significant milestone in the application of artificial intelligence in higher education. Due to its advanced natural language processing capabilities, ChatGPT quickly became popular among students worldwide. However, the increasing acceptance of ChatGPT among students has attracted significant attention, sparking both excitement and skepticism globally. In order to capture early students' perceptions about ChatGPT, the most comprehensive and large-scale global survey to date was conducted between the beginning of October 2023 and the end of February 2024. The questionnaire was prepared in seven different languages: English, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Japanese, Arabic, and Hebrew. It covered several aspects relevant to ChatGPT, including sociodemographic characteristics, usage, capabilities, regulation and ethical concerns, satisfaction and attitude, study issues and outcomes, skills development, labor market and skills mismatch, emotions, study and personal information, and general reflections. The survey targeted higher education students who are currently enrolled at any level in a higher education institution, are at least 18 years old, and have the legal capacity to provide free and voluntary consent to participate in an anonymous survey. Survey participants were recruited using a convenience sampling method, which involved promoting the survey in classrooms and through advertisements on university communication systems. The final dataset consists of 23,218 student responses from 109 different countries and territories. The data may prove useful for researchers studying students' perceptions of ChatGPT, including its implications across various aspects. Moreover, also higher education stakeholders may benefit from these data. While educators may benefit from the data in formulating curricula, including designing teaching methods and assessment tools, policymakers may consider the data when formulating strategies for higher education system development in the future.

    Description

IntroductionThe large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) language model chatbot, Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT), is renowned for its ability to provide data quickly and efficiently. This study aimed to assess the medical responses of ChatGPT regarding anesthetic procedures.MethodsTwo anesthesiologist authors selected 30 questions representing inquiries patients might have about surgery and anesthesia. These questions were inputted into two versions of ChatGPT in English. A total of 31 anesthesiologists then evaluated each response for quality, quantity, and overall assessment, using 5-point Likert scales. Descriptive statistics summarized the scores, and a paired sample t-test compared ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0.ResultsRegarding quality, “appropriate” was the most common rating for both ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0 (40 and 48%, respectively). For quantity, responses were deemed “insufficient” in 59% of cases for 3.5, and “adequate” in 69% for 4.0. In overall assessment, 3 points were most common for 3.5 (36%), while 4 points were predominant for 4.0 (42%). Mean quality scores were 3.40 and 3.73, and mean quantity scores were − 0.31 (between insufficient and adequate) and 0.03 (between adequate and excessive), respectively. The mean overall score was 3.21 for 3.5 and 3.67 for 4.0. Responses from 4.0 showed statistically significant improvement in three areas.ConclusionChatGPT generated responses mostly ranging from appropriate to slightly insufficient, providing an overall average amount of information. Version 4.0 outperformed 3.5, and further research is warranted to investigate the potential utility of AI chatbots in assisting patients with medical information.

    Description

BackgroundsThe field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen a major shift in recent years due to the development of new Machine Learning (ML) models such as Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT). GPT has achieved previously unheard-of levels of accuracy in most computerized language processing tasks and their chat-based variations.AimThe aim of this study was to investigate the problem-solving abilities of ChatGPT using two sets of verbal insight problems, with a known performance level established by a sample of human participants.Materials and methodsA total of 30 problems labeled as “practice problems” and “transfer problems” were administered to ChatGPT. ChatGPT's answers received a score of “0” for each incorrectly answered problem and a score of “1” for each correct response. The highest possible score for both the practice and transfer problems was 15 out of 15. The solution rate for each problem (based on a sample of 20 subjects) was used to assess and compare the performance of ChatGPT with that of human subjects.ResultsThe study highlighted that ChatGPT can be trained in out-of-the-box thinking and demonstrated potential in solving verbal insight problems. The global performance of ChatGPT equalled the most probable outcome for the human sample in both practice problems and transfer problems as well as upon their combination. Additionally, ChatGPT answer combinations were among the 5% of most probable outcomes for the human sample both when considering practice problems and pooled problem sets. These findings demonstrate that ChatGPT performance on both set of problems was in line with the mean rate of success of human subjects, indicating that it performed reasonably well.ConclusionsThe use of transformer architecture and self-attention in ChatGPT may have helped to prioritize inputs while predicting, contributing to its potential in verbal insight problem-solving. ChatGPT has shown potential in solving insight problems, thus highlighting the importance of incorporating AI into psychological research. However, it is acknowledged that there are still open challenges. Indeed, further research is required to fully understand AI's capabilities and limitations in verbal problem-solving.

    Description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most common and essential
technologies in this modern era, especially in the education and research
sectors. It mimics machine-processed human intellect. In modern times,
ChatGPT is one of the most effective and beneficial tools developed by
OpenAI. Provides prompt answers and feedback to help academics and
researchers. Using ChatGPT has various advantages, including improving
methods of instruction, preparing interactive lessons, assessment, and
advanced problem-solving. Threats against ChatGPT, however, include
diminishing creativity, and analytical thinking. Additionally, students would
adopt unfair procedures when submitting any tests or assignments online,
which would increase their dependency on AI systems rather than thinking
analytically. In this study, we have demonstrated arguments on both sides of
AI technology. We believe that our study would provide a depth of
knowledge and more informed discussion. Data is collected via an offline
platform and then machine learning algorithms such as K-nearest neighbour
(K-NN), support vector machine (SVM), naive bayes (NB), decision tree
(DT), and random forest (RF) are used to analyze the data which helps to
improve teaching and learning techniques where SVM shows best
performance. The results of the study would offer several significant
learning and research directions as well as ensure safe and responsible
    adoption.

Description

ChatGPT is used most widely among those between ** and ** around the world. The youngest group, those under **, are the second largest userbase, and together those under ** account for over ** percent of ChatGPT users. It is perhaps unsurprising that the younger age brackets use the chatbot more than older as that is the common trend with new technologies. Male users were far more numerous than female users, with males representing over ** percent of total users in 2023.
