    Description

The Agricultural Price Index (API) is a monthly publication that measures the price changes in agricultural outputs and inputs for the UK. The output series reflects the price farmers receive for their products (referred to as the farm-gate price). Information is collected for all major crops (for example wheat and potatoes) and on livestock and livestock products (for example sheep, milk and eggs). The input series reflects the price farmers pay for goods and services. This is split into two groups: goods and services currently consumed; and goods and services contributing to investment. Goods and services currently consumed refer to items that are used up in the production process, for example fertiliser, or seed. Goods and services contributing to investment relate to items that are required but not consumed in the production process, such as tractors or buildings.

A price index is a way of measuring relative price changes compared to a reference point or base year which is given a value of 100. The year used as the base year needs to be updated over time to reflect changing market trends. The latest data are presented with a base year of 2020 = 100. To maintain continuity with the current API time series, the UK continues to use standardised methodology adopted across the EU. Details of this internationally recognised methodology are described in the https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-manuals-and-guidelines/-/ks-bh-02-003">Handbook for EU agricultural price statistics.
Please note: The historical time series with base years 2000 = 100, 2005 = 100, 2010 = 100 and 2015 = 100 are not updated monthly and presented for archive purposes only. Each file gives the date the series was last updated.

For those commodities where farm-gate prices are currently unavailable we use the best proxy data that are available (for example wholesale prices). Similarly, calculations are based on UK prices where possible but sometimes we cannot obtain these. In such cases prices for Great Britain, England and Wales or England are used instead.

Next update: see the statistics release calendar.

    Description

The Fresh Bread and Bakery Goods Wholesaling industry in the United States has remained a vital part of the nation’s food distribution network, sustained by steady consumer demand for bread, pastries and specialty baked goods. Over the past year, the market has continued to adapt to evolving consumer preferences, with growth in artisanal, organic and freshly baked products. Despite competition and rising input costs, wholesalers have benefited from renewed interest in locally produced and minimally processed baked goods, as well as the expansion of retail bakery sections in grocery stores that emphasize quality and freshness. Fresh bread and bakery goods wholesaler revenue is anticipated to rise at a CAGR of 1.5% over the five years to 2025 to reach $73.1 billion, despite dropping an estimated 0.1% in 2025 alone. During the past five years, the industry experienced both consolidation among major distributors and the emergence of nimble new entrants specializing in niche bakery products. Shifting consumer attitudes toward health and authenticity have reshaped product portfolios and distribution strategies, prompting wholesalers to collaborate with artisan bakers and invest in efficient logistics systems to ensure product freshness. Growth in clean-label, gluten-free and high-fiber bread has also encouraged reformulation across the supply chain, allowing wholesalers to cater more effectively to wellness-focused buyers while maintaining consistent delivery performance. These developments reflect a maturing industry that balances tradition and innovation to remain relevant in a dynamic marketplace. Looking ahead, the industry is poised for moderate yet steady expansion as the economic recovery drives higher consumer spending and companies continue to invest in technology, sustainability and supply chain resilience. Wholesalers are expected to leverage digital ordering platforms, route optimization and automation to streamline operations and enhance reliability across customer channels. Demand for environmentally responsible packaging and locally sourced ingredients will continue to shape business strategies, prompting distributors to adopt greener logistics and more transparent sourcing practices. This combination of efficiency, innovation and sustainability will underpin the industry’s future growth, reinforcing its critical role in supporting the nation’s food retail and hospitality sectors. Overall, revenue is expected to expand at a CAGR of 1.0% over the next five years to reach $76.8 billion in 2030.

    Description

Industry revenue has declined over the past five years, largely due to the domestic cereal, pasta and baking mix market’s increasing saturation. Manufacturers have responded to these trends with new product lines that cater to emerging consumer trends, like rising health consciousness and demand for convenience. Nutrient-fortified, high-fibre, cholesterol-lowering and low-sugar alternative product lines have become more common, as well as products that cater to time-poor consumers, like breakfast bars. While product innovations may spur short-term sales, it’s unlikely that they’ll create meaningful long-term industry revenue growth, given the availability of substitutes. Product innovations’ inability to bring dramatic revenue growth has contributed to industry revenue declining at an anticipated annualised 4.4% over the past five years, as well as a 7.1% drop expected in 2024-25, to an estimated $3.1 billion. Increasing primary input prices threaten industry margins, as these costs represent a large share of expenses. While cereal, pasta and baking mix prices did rise as a result of the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, the abundance of substitutes makes manufacturers hesitant to pass the entirety of these input cost hikes on to consumers. Major supermarkets’ market power has also strained cereal, pasta and baking mix manufacturers. Supermarkets are a dominant market for industry manufacturers and have significant control over product pricing and products’ ability to reach consumers. As cost-of-living pressures have weighed on consumers’ willingness to spend, they have increasingly turned to less costly supermarket private-label brands, increasing competition for industry manufacturers’ own products. The industry’s outlook will depend on how manufacturers address stagnating demand and market saturation domestically through product innovation and brand development, as well as implementing efficiency improvements that reduce costs. However, tapping into growing Asian export markets presents an opportunity for revenue growth. Over the next five years, export values are forecast to surge, reflecting increasing demand from the middle classes in East and South-East Asia. Export growth is set to underpin projected revenue growth of an annualised 0.4% over the five years through the end of 2029-30, to $3.2 billion. Without this export growth, revenue growth would likely contract instead.

    Description

This study shows the development of the price of cereals, the principal food since the 17th century, using the example of Berlin. The research was carried out by the Reich Statistical Office (Statistisches Reichsamt) and the Institut für Konjunkturforschung (German Institute for Economic Research) within the scope of a general historical study project focusing on German wholesale prices. Due to a lack of primary-source price lists for rye, wheat, barley, and oats for the whole period of examination, the respective currencies have been converted into German mark/Reichsmark per 1,000 kg in order to make a thorough comparison possible. Topics: List of Data tables within the HISTAT research and download system: 1. Grain prices in German mark/Reichsmark (per 1,000 kg) for rye, wheat, barley, and oat in Berlin (1624-1934).

    Description

The price of gas in the United Kingdom was 80.1 British pence per therm in the third quarter of 2025. It is anticipated gas prices will increase to 85.4 pence in the first quarter of 2026 before gradually falling to just under 77.6 pence by the second quarter of of the year. Surging energy costs and the cost of living crisis At the height of the UK's cost of living crisis in 2022, approximately 91 percent of UK households were experiencing rising prices compared with the previous month. It was during 2022 that the UK's CPI inflation rate reached a peak of 11.1 percent, in October of that year. Food and energy, in particular, were the main drivers of inflation during this period, with energy inflation reaching 26.6 percent, and food prices increasing by 18.2 percent at the height of the crisis. Although prices fell to more expected levels by 2024, an uptick in inflation is forecast for 2025, with prices rising by 3.7 percent in the third quarter of the year. Global Inflation Crisis The UK was not alone in suffering rapid inflation during this time period, with several countries across the world experiencing an inflation crisis. The roots of the crisis began as the global economy gradually emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Blocked-up supply chains, struggled to recover as quickly as consumer demand, with food and energy prices also facing upward pressure. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to Europe gradually weening itself of cheap Russian energy exports, while for several months Ukraine struggled to export crucial food supplies to the rest of the World.

    Description

In 2022, the largest supermarket chain in Saudi Arabia Al Othaim had ** more outlets than the second biggest chain Panda Supermarket, and more branches than the next three biggest supermarket chains in the country combined. Al Othaim operates retail, wholesale, and grocery stores in the country, and is listed on the Saudi exchange as part of the MSCI Saudi Arabia Standard Index. Supermarkets in Saudi Arabia The market size of hypermarkets and supermarkets in Saudi Arabia is worth billions of U.S. dollars each year and has overall seen its value increase in the past decade. Although Panda Supermarket which is owned by Savola Group has considerably fewer outlets than Al Othaim, it is the only retailer which made the top five in terms of number of outlets to also to make the list of top five hypermarkets in Saudi Arabia during the same period. With a growing population, influx of foreign workers, and plans to diversify its economy as part of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s retail sector is only expected to grow in the coming years. This is illustrated by the number of organized retailers in the country which has witnessed a sharp increase in both supermarket and hypermarket branches. Retail in the Region Although Saudi Arabia has one of the largest economies in the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the largest population, its market size of supermarkets and hypermarkets was marginally below that of the United Arab Emirates. This is a reflection of the retail market in the UAE, which is much older, far more diverse, and developed than other countries in the GCC. In recent years, there has been a marked interest by many of the major retail chains dipping into the e-commerce market. Thus, it has been quite notable to see that e-commerce sales comprise a sizable portion of the supermarket and hypermarket growth channels in the UAE. Physical retail locations are by no means going away; however, the future is expected to see a growing shift towards online retail with countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE currently leading this transition.
