Which nations are at the forefront of lumber production? The production of lumber is dependent on the availability of forest resources, market demand, and technological advances. Sustainable forest management practices a continuous supply of timber, while economic factors and construction activity drive demand. Among the countries countries with the largest production of lumber were China and the United States. Other countries with a relatively high lumber production rate were Russia, China, and Brazil.

Timber wholesalers have struggled amid challenging building conditions, which have curtailed revenue. Declining construction activity and economic uncertainty have disrupted downstream demand conditions. Industry revenue is expected to have dropped at an annualised 2.7% over the five years through 2024-25, to $3.2 billion. This trend includes an anticipated 1.5% dip in 2024-25, primarily due to expected sharp falls in demand from residential building construction and carpentry services. Timber price fluctuations strongly influence the industry’s profitability. The domestic price of timber has risen, elevating timber distributors’ purchase costs. Inflation-induced high operating expenses have compelled timber wholesalers to pass on cost increases to customers to remain viable. Some larger industry operators have consolidated with upstream timber manufacturers or acquired smaller wholesalers to leverage the cost benefits of vertical or horizontal integration, which has contributed to heightened overall industry profitability. Yet a downwards trajectory in domestic demand has sidelined many small-scale players, resulting in a drop in the number of enterprises and establishments. Industry revenue is forecast to inch upwards at an annualised 0.2% over the five years through 2029-30, to $3.3 billion. The Central Government (Te Kawanatanga o Aotearoa) is on track to allocate more funding towards major infrastructure developments to stimulate economic growth, fuelling industry expansion. Yet drastic revenue losses stemming from other factors, notably slumping demand from residential building construction, will largely counterbalance this growth. Input costs are projected to grow slightly. Alongside relatively high interest rates, more industry operators are set to focus on improving operational efficiencies. Timber wholesalers are projected to increase capital expenditure on automation, like automated selection systems, to perform specialised tasks. This strategy is forecast to reduce timber wholesalers’ need for labour, which will reduce the average wage and industry participation.
