TwitterThe Wholesale Trade Survey is a statistical survey conducted by government agencies or statistical organizations to collect data and measure the performance and characteristics of the wholesale trade sector within a specific country or region. It aims to provide valuable information about wholesale trade activities, trends, and economic indicators.
The survey typically collects data from wholesale businesses, which are involved in buying goods in large quantities from manufacturers or producers and selling them to retailers, institutional clients, or other businesses. The data collected in the survey can include:
Sales and revenue: Information about the total sales volume and revenue generated by wholesale businesses within a specified period, such as monthly, quarterly, or annually.
Inventory levels: Data on the inventory or stock levels held by wholesale businesses, including the value and quantity of goods held in storage or warehouses.
Purchases: Information about the quantity and value of goods purchased by wholesale businesses from manufacturers or producers. This data helps in understanding the demand for different products in the market.
Employment: Statistics on the number of people employed in the wholesale trade sector, including full-time and part-time workers.
Industry-specific data: Depending on the survey's scope, additional data may be collected for specific industries or sectors within wholesale trade, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, clothing, or automotive.
Geographic information: The survey may also gather data on the geographic distribution of wholesale trade activities, including the number and location of wholesale businesses in different regions or cities.
The Wholesale Trade Survey provides insights into the overall performance, growth, and trends in the wholesale trade sector. It helps policymakers, researchers, businesses, and investors to analyze market conditions, identify opportunities, make informed business decisions, and assess the economic health of the wholesale trade industry. The data collected from the survey is often used in economic analysis, policy formulation, forecasting, and market research.

Wholesale trade agents and brokers make money through fees and commissions. The rise of large-scale grocery, home electronics and office supply stores with in-house distribution networks has diminished the need for traditional wholesale trade agents and brokers. The integration of e-commerce into retail sales fostered direct business-to-business electronic transactions, further eroding traditional broker services. Revenue is expected to decline at a CAGR of 0.7% to $785.9 billion through the end of 2025, including a drop of 2.3% in 2025 alone. Rising competition from direct sales, vertical integration of suppliers and sellers’ growing reliance on e-commerce channels are pressuring the industry. As sellers reduce their dependence on third parties, the industry faces a deteriorating client pool, hindering growth. Despite the pressures on top-line expansion, trade agents and brokers are optimizing their operations and becoming more efficient in allocating their capital. Profit remains steady at approximately 6.8% of revenue in 2025, thanks to lean staffing models and limited operating costs. At the same time, business formation has expanded the customer base, as many new companies lack the procurement infrastructure to manage sourcing activities independently and rely on brokers for supplier access and product insights. However, falling employment within the industry shows agencies are doing more with fewer workers, highlighting efficiency gains but limiting job opportunities. Continued direct sales channels and e-commerce expansion will intensify competition for wholesale trade agents and brokers, who must pivot to remain relevant. To stay viable, brokers are expected to offer specialized services, such as supply chain consultancy, risk management and custom solutions. While these challenges grow, economic expansion is expected to partly offset the impact of rising competition, although the presence of direct sales channels will continue to pose a significant challenge. The convenience and cost-effectiveness of e-commerce platforms will present ongoing challenges as businesses are expected to opt for online solutions over traditional brokers. Revenue is set to decline by a CAGR of 0.5% to an estimated $765.5 billion through the end of 2030.

This table shows relevant data for the economic sector 'wholesale trade', e.g. the number of persons employed, costs and revenues, turnover and other financial results. The figures can be divided by a number of branches according to Statistics Netherlands' Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities 1993 (SIC'93).
The survey questionnaire was changed slightly in 2007. Up to and including 2006, wage subsidies were counted as (other) business returns. From 2007 onwards these subsidies are deducted from business costs. Because of these changes, results for 2007 are not fully comparable with results for 2006. The effect of these changes on business returns and business costs are small for most of the branches.
Data available from 2006 - 2008.
Status of the figures: All data are definite.
Changes as of 1 September 2011:
This table has been stopped. Two important points in the processing of
the data on 2009 have changed :
- a new version of the Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic
Activities has been implemented (SIC 2008);
- the statistical unit has been changed.
Due to these changes, the figures are no longer comparable to those of the
previous years. Therefore new table has been started from 2009 onwards
(see also heading 3).
Changes as of 12 November 2010: Closer research has shown that two SIC-groups within wholesale trade for reporting year 2008 are unsufficiently reliable. These are: 5186 Wholesale of electric motors, electronic instruments, switchboxes and installation material. 5187 Wholesale of other machinery for industry and trade.
Changes as of 1 July 2010: Figures of 2008 have been added. Figures of SIC'93-group 5132a of 2008 are not comparable with those of 2007. This is because of changes in structure of companies, changes in SIC'93-classification and so on.
Figures of 2007 of SIC'93-groups 5132a, 5142, 5153, 5181a and 5184a have been adjusted because of new data sent by companies.
