All data are prone to error and require data cleaning prior to analysis. An important example is longitudinal growth data, for which there are no universally agreed standard methods for identifying and removing implausible values and many existing methods have limitations that restrict their usage across different domains. A decision-making algorithm that modified or deleted growth measurements based on a combination of pre-defined cut-offs and logic rules was designed. Five data cleaning methods for growth were tested with and without the addition of the algorithm and applied to five different longitudinal growth datasets: four uncleaned canine weight or height datasets and one pre-cleaned human weight dataset with randomly simulated errors. Prior to the addition of the algorithm, data cleaning based on non-linear mixed effects models was the most effective in all datasets and had on average a minimum of 26.00% higher sensitivity and 0.12% higher specificity than other methods. Data cleaning methods using the algorithm had improved data preservation and were capable of correcting simulated errors according to the gold standard; returning a value to its original state prior to error simulation. The algorithm improved the performance of all data cleaning methods and increased the average sensitivity and specificity of the non-linear mixed effects model method by 7.68% and 0.42% respectively. Using non-linear mixed effects models combined with the algorithm to clean data allows individual growth trajectories to vary from the population by using repeated longitudinal measurements, identifies consecutive errors or those within the first data entry, avoids the requirement for a minimum number of data entries, preserves data where possible by correcting errors rather than deleting them and removes duplications intelligently. This algorithm is broadly applicable to data cleaning anthropometric data in different mammalian species and could be adapted for use in a range of other domains.

TwitterData cleaning is widely acknowledged as an important yet tedious task when dealing with large amounts of data. Thus, there is always a cost-benefit trade-off to consider. In particular, it is important to assess this trade-off when not every data point and data error is equally important for a task. This is often the case when statistical analysis or machine learning (ML) models derive knowledge about data. If we only care about maximizing the utility score of the applications, such as accuracy or F1 scores, many tasks can afford some degree of data quality problems. Recent studies analyzed the impact of various data error types on vanilla ML tasks, showing that missing values and outliers significantly impact the outcome of such models. In this paper, we expand the setting to one where data cleaning is not considered in isolation but as an equal parameter among many other hyper-parameters that influence feature selection, regularization, and model selection. In particular, we use state-of-the-art AutoML frameworks to automatically learn the parameters that benefit a particular ML binary classification task. In our study, we see that specific cleaning routines still play a significant role but can also be entirely avoided if the choice of a specific model or the filtering of specific features diminishes the overall impact.

This dataset is a cleaned version of the Chicago Crime Dataset, which can be found here. All rights for the dataset go to the original owners. The purpose of this dataset is to display my skills in visualizations and creating dashboards. To be specific, I will attempt to create a dashboard that will allow users to see metrics for a specific crime within a given year using filters and metrics. Due to this, there will not be much of a focus on the analysis of the data, but there will be portions discussing the validity of the dataset, the steps I took to clean the data, and how I organized it. The cleaned datasets can be found below, the Query (which utilized BigQuery) can be found here and the Tableau dashboard can be found here.
The dataset comes directly from the City of Chicago's website under the page "City Data Catalog." The data is gathered directly from the Chicago Police's CLEAR (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) and is updated daily to present the information accurately. This means that a crime on a specific date may be changed to better display the case. The dataset represents crimes starting all the way from 2001 to seven days prior to today's date.
Using the ROCCC method, we can see that: * The data has high reliability: The data covers the entirety of Chicago from a little over 2 decades. It covers all the wards within Chicago and even gives the street names. While we may not have an idea for how big the sample size is, I do believe that the dataset has high reliability since it geographically covers the entirety of Chicago. * The data has high originality: The dataset was gained directly from the Chicago Police Dept. using their database, so we can say this dataset is original. * The data is somewhat comprehensive: While we do have important information such as the types of crimes committed and their geographic location, I do not think this gives us proper insights as to why these crimes take place. We can pinpoint the location of the crime, but we are limited by the information we have. How hot was the day of the crime? Did the crime take place in a neighborhood with low-income? I believe that these key factors prevent us from getting proper insights as to why these crimes take place, so I would say that this dataset is subpar with how comprehensive it is. * The data is current: The dataset is updated frequently to display crimes that took place seven days prior to today's date and may even update past crimes as more information comes to light. Due to the frequent updates, I do believe the data is current. * The data is cited: As mentioned prior, the data is collected directly from the polices CLEAR system, so we can say that the data is cited.

To do this, we are going to do the following: * Check for any null values and determine whether we should remove them. * Update any values where there may be typos. * Check for outliers and determine if we should remove them.

Initial data analysis (IDA) is the part of the data pipeline that takes place between the end of data retrieval and the beginning of data analysis that addresses the research question. Systematic IDA and clear reporting of the IDA findings is an important step towards reproducible research. A general framework of IDA for observational studies includes data cleaning, data screening, and possible updates of pre-planned statistical analyses. Longitudinal studies, where participants are observed repeatedly over time, pose additional challenges, as they have special features that should be taken into account in the IDA steps before addressing the research question. We propose a systematic approach in longitudinal studies to examine data properties prior to conducting planned statistical analyses. In this paper we focus on the data screening element of IDA, assuming that the research aims are accompanied by an analysis plan, meta-data are well documented, and data cleaning has already been performed. IDA data screening comprises five types of explorations, covering the analysis of participation profiles over time, evaluation of missing data, presentation of univariate and multivariate descriptions, and the depiction of longitudinal aspects. Executing the IDA plan will result in an IDA report to inform data analysts about data properties and possible implications for the analysis plan—another element of the IDA framework. Our framework is illustrated focusing on hand grip strength outcome data from a data collection across several waves in a complex survey. We provide reproducible R code on a public repository, presenting a detailed data screening plan for the investigation of the average rate of age-associated decline of grip strength. With our checklist and reproducible R code we provide data analysts a framework to work with longitudinal data in an informed way, enhancing the reproducibility and validity of their work.

Therefore, to achieve these goals, the sample had to be representative on the sub-district level. The raw survey data provided by the Statistical Office was cleaned and harmonized by the Economic Research Forum, in the context of a major research project to develop and expand knowledge on equity and inequality in the Arab region. The main focus of the project is to measure the magnitude and direction of change in inequality and to understand the complex contributing social, political and economic forces influencing its levels. However, the measurement and analysis of the magnitude and direction of change in this inequality cannot be consistently carried out without harmonized and comparable micro-level data on income and expenditures. Therefore, one important component of this research project is securing and harmonizing household surveys from as many countries in the region as possible, adhering to international statistics on household living standards distribution. Once the dataset has been compiled, the Economic Research Forum makes it available, subject to confidentiality agreements, to all researchers and institutions concerned with data collection and issues of inequality.

The 2008 Household Expenditure and Income Survey sample was designed using two-stage cluster stratified sampling method. In the first stage, the primary sampling units (PSUs), the blocks, were drawn using probability proportionate to the size, through considering the number of households in each block to be the block size. The second stage included drawing the household sample (8 households from each PSU) using the systematic sampling method. Fourth substitute households from each PSU were drawn, using the systematic sampling method, to be used on the first visit to the block in case that any of the main sample households was not visited for any reason.
To estimate the sample size, the coefficient of variation and design effect in each subdistrict were calculated for the expenditure variable from data of the 2006 Household Expenditure and Income Survey. This results was used to estimate the sample size at sub-district level, provided that the coefficient of variation of the expenditure variable at the sub-district level did not exceed 10%, with a minimum number of clusters that should not be less than 6 at the district level, that is to ensure good clusters representation in the administrative areas to enable drawing poverty pockets.
It is worth mentioning that the expected non-response in addition to areas where poor families are concentrated in the major cities were taken into consideration in designing the sample. Therefore, a larger sample size was taken from these areas compared to other ones, in order to help in reaching the poverty pockets and covering them.

All data are prone to error and require data cleaning prior to analysis. An important example is longitudinal growth data, for which there are no universally agreed standard methods for identifying and removing implausible values and many existing methods have limitations that restrict their usage across different domains. A decision-making algorithm that modified or deleted growth measurements based on a combination of pre-defined cut-offs and logic rules was designed. Five data cleaning methods for growth were tested with and without the addition of the algorithm and applied to five different longitudinal growth datasets: four uncleaned canine weight or height datasets and one pre-cleaned human weight dataset with randomly simulated errors. Prior to the addition of the algorithm, data cleaning based on non-linear mixed effects models was the most effective in all datasets and had on average a minimum of 26.00% higher sensitivity and 0.12% higher specificity than other methods. Data cleaning methods using the algorithm had improved data preservation and were capable of correcting simulated errors according to the gold standard; returning a value to its original state prior to error simulation. The algorithm improved the performance of all data cleaning methods and increased the average sensitivity and specificity of the non-linear mixed effects model method by 7.68% and 0.42% respectively. Using non-linear mixed effects models combined with the algorithm to clean data allows individual growth trajectories to vary from the population by using repeated longitudinal measurements, identifies consecutive errors or those within the first data entry, avoids the requirement for a minimum number of data entries, preserves data where possible by correcting errors rather than deleting them and removes duplications intelligently. This algorithm is broadly applicable to data cleaning anthropometric data in different mammalian species and could be adapted for use in a range of other domains.
