    UPDATES

Data is now available from 2004 to may 2021. NULL values are now replaces with -99999 ANP official website has monthly data until Feb 2022, but since this dataset is weekly organized it will be update to 2022 values as soon as this information is available.

    The Data

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Bio fuels (ANP in Portuguese) releases weekly reports of gas, diesel and other fuels prices used in transportation across the country. These datasets bring the mean value per liter, number of gas stations analyzed and other information grouped by regions and states across the country.

    Source

As stated before, these datasets are provided by ANP, and are regularly updated with new dates and information - which can be retrieved here (in portuguese).

What can be done with this?

    • How different regions of Brazil saw their gas prices change?
    • Within a region, which states increased more their prices?
    • Which states are the cheapest (or most expensive) for different types of fuels?

    Description

This table shows the average prices paid for natural gas and electricity. The total prices represent the sum of energy supply prices and network prices.

The total price is the price paid by an end-user, for instance a household or an industrial company consuming energy in their production process. Natural gas used for non-energy purposes or for electricity generation is excluded from the data.

Data available from: 1st semester of 2009

Status of the figures: The figures in this table are provisional for the two most recent semesters, and the annual figures follow the status of the second semester of the relevant reporting year. The remaining figures are final.

Changes as of September 30: Figures for the first half of 2025 have been added.

The network prices for final non-household customers will from now on, and dating back to 2009, be derived from administrative data sources. This now follows the methodology for households. Consumption data can be combined with tariffs that are published on the websites of the network companies, providing the necessary data to compile the prices. The change in methodology is carried out for the full time-series, making sure the network prices are consistent and price changes are not the result of varying measurement approaches.

When will new figures be published? New provisional figures will be published three months after the semesters end, at the end of September and at the end of March.

    Description

    Context

After reaching historic lows during the pandemic, energy consumption increased in the aftermath of deconfinement. This trend was mostly due to economic factors; as restrictions were either reduced or removed, several countries saw a rise in both consumption and general business activity. With the rapid normalization of daily life, many supply chains came increasingly under strain. Several months later, the Russo-Ukrainian War placed further stress on global logistics networks. Energy prices soared, and inflation became a major issue in nations around the world. In an attempt to curb the consequences of this trend, several governments decided to adopt a series of energy-saving measures. France was no exception. In 2022, the French government launched its own Energy Saving Plan (Plan de sobriété énergétique). With measures aimed at households, businesses and the public sector, authorities are now hoping to cut 10% of national energy consumption by 2024 (2019 being the reference year).

    Project objective

To reach these energy-saving goals, it is crucial to understand which trends affect French consumption over time. As such, we will be analyzing national gas and electricity use over a ten-year period (2011-2021). Hopefully, this will allow us to identify the main sources of energy consumption in France.

    About the dataset

The project dataset was imported from the French government’s Open Data website. Showing the evolution of national electricity and gas consumption over a ten-year period (2011-2021), it was created and collected by Agence ORE, an association of national gas and electricity distribution network operators. The dataset operates under an open license, and includes variables such as operator, year, energy type, consumption category code, consumer category, consumer sector console, consumer sector, company business identification (NAF code), energy consumed, energy delivery point (pdl), and consumption regions. Observations were found in almost 30000 rows.

The dataset was imported and stored on my computer. However, copies of both the raw and clean files can be found in this post.

Our dataset provides extensive information. Nevertheless, we are aware of two potential limitations:

    • The data doesn’t concern all energy commodities (only gas and electricity)
    • The data doesn’t cover 2022 (year where the Russo-Ukrainian War began)

While such information is missing, our project should not face any major obstacles. Given the long-term nature of our data, national trends should be detected even without 2022 energy consumption. In addition, gas and electricity are two of France’s major energy sources and can thus provide many of the expected insights.

    Processing

Since the dataset was relatively small (under 30000 rows), I processed the data using Microsoft Excel. First, I created two folders called “Raw Data” and “Working Sheet” (the latter being for the clean data). Afterwards, I eliminated the following unnecessary columns:

    • Code_categorie_consommation
    • Code_grand_secteur
    • Code_naf, operateur
    • Libelle_secteur_naf2
    • Pdl
    • Code_region
    • Indqual
    • Nombre_mailles_secretisees
    • Libellé_categorie_consommation

Once the useful columns remained, I translated their names from French to English. Thus:

    • “Annee” became “Year”
    • “Filière” became “Energy type”
    • “Libelle_grand_secteur” became “Sector”
    • “Conso” became “Energy consumption (MWh)”
    • “Libelle_region” became “Region”

With this done, I proceeded to remove any potential duplicates from the data using the “remove duplicates” option in Excel’s “Data” section (about 200 rows were removed). Following this, I proceeded to both spell-check and translate data values by using the “Find and replace” option in Excel. As such, the following changes were made:

    • “Energy” column:
      • “Electricité” became “Electricity”
      • “Gaz” became “Gas”
    • “Sector” column:
      • “Résidentiel” became “Households”
      • “Industrie” became “Industry”
      • “Tertiaire” became “Services”
    • “Region” column: corrected typos and other spelling errors for French regional names.

I then proceeded to eliminate rows with empty and 0 values. Once this was completed, I was left with over 15000 rows of data.

To get a better sense of energy consumption on different scales, I also converted MWh to KWh and TWh in separate columns: “Energy consumption (KWh)” and “(Energy consumption (TWh)”. In the end however, I preferred MWh as a metric since it was simpler to analyze.

All values were rounded to the nearest whole number.

    Analysis

Once my data was clean, I used Power BI to create a dashboard (all of my files are available in this post).

At first sight, it would seem that French gas and electricity use gre...

    Description

The 2025 annual OPEC basket price stood at ***** U.S. dollars per barrel as of August. This would be lower than the 2024 average, which amounted to ***** U.S. dollars. The abbreviation OPEC stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and includes Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the OPEC is to coordinate the oil policies of its member states. It was founded in 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq. The OPEC Reference Basket The OPEC crude oil price is defined by the price of the so-called OPEC (Reference) basket. This basket is an average of prices of the various petroleum blends that are produced by the OPEC members. Some of these oil blends are, for example: Saharan Blend from Algeria, Basra Light from Iraq, Arab Light from Saudi Arabia, BCF 17 from Venezuela, et cetera. By increasing and decreasing its oil production, OPEC tries to keep the price between a given maxima and minima. Benchmark crude oil The OPEC basket is one of the most important benchmarks for crude oil prices worldwide. Other significant benchmarks are UK Brent, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), and Dubai Crude (Fateh). Because there are many types and grades of oil, such benchmarks are indispensable for referencing them on the global oil market. The 2025 fall in prices was the result of weakened demand outlooks exacerbated by extensive U.S. trade tariffs.

    Description

Revenue potential from fossil fuel subsidy and carbon price reform shows how much revenues would increase if Net ECRs were raised to reach a carbon benchmark of EUR 120 per tonne of CO2 for all fossil fuels. Net energy tax revenues are a bottom-up estimate of the net revenues resulting from taxes and subsidies on energy, and the revenues from auctioning emissions permits for energy-related CO2.

Companion dataset to the OECD Series on Carbon Pricing and Energy Taxation.

The "Pricing Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2024: Gearing Up to Bring Emissions Down" report tracks how explicit carbon prices, energy taxes and subsidies that lower pre-tax prices on emissions or energy products have evolved between 2021 and 2023 across 79 countries, covering approximately 82% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Explicit carbon prices, energy taxes and subsidies are detailed by country, sector, product and instrument. The use of a common methodology ensures comparability across countries. Summary indicators facilitate cross country comparisons and allow policy makers and the public to keep track of progress made and identify opportunities for reform..

    Description

This table contains consumer prices for electricity and gas. Weighted average monthly prices are published broken down into transport rate, delivery rates and taxes, both including and excluding VAT. These prices are published on a monthly basis. The prices presented in this table were used to compile the CPI up to May 2023. Prices for newly offered contracts were collected. Contract types that are no longer offered, but have been in previous reporting periods, are imputed. The average can therefore diverge from the prices paid for energy contracts by Dutch households.

Data available from January 2018 up to May 2023.

Status of the figures: The figures are definitive.

Changes as of 17 July 2023: This table will no longer be updated. Due to a change in the underlying data and accompanying method for calculcating average energy prices, a new table was created. See paragraph 3.

Changes as of 13 February: Average delivery rates are not shown in this table from January 2023 up to May 2023. With the introduction of the price cap, the average energy rates (delivery rates) of fixed and variable energy contracts together remained useful for calculating a development for the CPI. However, as a pricelevel, they are less useful. Average energy prices from January 2023 up to May 2023 are published in a customized table. In this publication, only data concerning new variable contracts are taken into account

When will new figures be published? Does not apply.

    Description

Forbes Global 2000 ranks the largest companies in the world using four metrics: sales, profits, assets, and market value. Market turbulence has pushed down the minimum market value to be considered for the 2022 list to $7.6 billion compared to $8.26 billion in 2021, but the minimum for all other metrics is up over last year.

Berkshire Hathaway took the No. 1 spot for the first time since Forbes started publishing the Global 2000 in 2003, dethroning the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which dropped to No. 2 after nine consecutive years at the top of the list. Big oil rebounded rapidly from last year’s low ranks, boosted by rising oil prices. ExxonMobil is No. 15 this year, up from No. 317 in 2021 and Shell is No. 16, up from No. 324. Both companies saw profits swing back into positive territory after last year’s losses.

As a group, the companies on the 2022 Global 2000 account for $47.6 trillion in revenues, $5.0 trillion in profits, $233.7 trillion in assets and $76.5 trillion in market cap. There are 58 countries represented on the 2022 list. The United States has the most with 590 companies, followed by China/Hong Kong (351) and Japan (196).

We used the latest-12-months’ financial data available to us as of April 22, 2022 to calculate the metrics used for our ranking.
