This statistic depicts the age distribution in the United States from 2014 to 2024. In 2024, about 17.32 percent of the U.S. population fell into the 0-14 year category, 64.75 percent into the 15-64 age group and 17.93 percent of the population were over 65 years of age. The increasing population of the United States The United States of America is one of the most populated countries in the world, trailing just behind China and India. A total population count of around 320 million inhabitants and a more-or-less steady population growth over the past decade indicate that the country has steadily improved its living conditions and standards for the population. Leading healthier lifestyles and improved living conditions have resulted in a steady increase of the life expectancy at birth in the United States. Life expectancies of men and women at birth in the United States were at a record high in 2012. Furthermore, a constant fertility rate in recent years and a decrease in the death rate and infant mortality, all due to the improved standard of living and health care conditions, have helped not only the American population to increase but as a result, the share of the population younger than 15 and older than 65 years has also increased in recent years, as can be seen above.

Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Texas population pyramid, which represents the Texas population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. Asexuality generally refers to experiencing a lack of sexual attraction towards other people. Previous research has found that asexual-identified individuals participate in solo and partnered sexual acts and engage in romantic relationships, yet most studies rely on clinical or internet-based convenience samples. The 2012 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB) is a nationally representative probability survey of women and men ages 18+ in the United States. The survey was cross-sectional and administered confidentially via the Internet. Participants were asked about characteristics of their recent and lifetime sexual experiences, relationship happiness, sexual satisfaction, and demographics. More women than men identified as asexual and asexual-identified women were mostly ages 45+. Significantly more asexual men than women reported partnered genital rubbing and vaginal intercourse. When compared to self-identified heterosexual, gay/lesbian, and bisexual individuals, there were no significant differences in number of reported lifetime vaginal, oral, or anal sex partners; however, asexual individuals reported a significantly younger age at first vaginal intercourse. The current research advances knowledge and understanding of asexuality and provides examples of various behavioral and relationship characteristics among self-identified asexual individuals in the United States. Implications for researchers, clinicians, and sexuality educators are discussed.

As of June 2025, 24.2 percent of Facebook users in the United States were aged between 25 and 34 years, making up Facebook’s largest audience in the country. Overall, almost 19 percent of users belonged to the 18 to 24-year age group. Does everyone in the U.S. use Facebook? In 2024, there were approximately 250 million Facebook users in the U.S., a figure which is projected to steadily increase, and reach 262.8 million by 2028. Social media users in the United States have a very high awareness of the social media giant. Expectedly, 94 percent of users had heard of the brand in 2025. Although the vast majority of U.S. social networkers knew of Facebook, the likeability of the platform was not so impressive at 68 percent. Nonetheless, usage, loyalty, and buzz around the brand remained relatively high. Facebook, Meta, and the metaverse A strategic rebranding from Facebook to Meta Platforms in late 2021 boded well for the company in Mark Zuckerberg’s attempt to be strongly linked to the metaverse, and to be considered more than just a social media company. According to a survey conducted in the U.S. in early 2022, Meta Platforms is the brand that Americans most associated with the metaverse.  

In 2024, 34.59 percent of all households in the United States were two person households. In 1970, this figure was at 28.92 percent. Single households Single mother households are usually the most common households with children under 18 years old found in the United States. As of 2021, the District of Columbia and North Dakota had the highest share of single-person households in the United States. Household size in the United States has decreased over the past century, due to customs and traditions changing. Families are typically more nuclear, whereas in the past, multigenerational households were more common. Furthermore, fertility rates have also decreased, meaning that women do not have as many children as they used to. Average households in Utah Out of all states in the U.S., Utah was reported to have the largest average household size. This predominately Mormon state has about three million inhabitants. The Church of the Latter-Day Saints, or Mormonism, plays a large role in Utah, and can contribute to the high birth rate and household size in Utah. The Church of Latter-Day Saints promotes having many children and tight-knit families. Furthermore, Utah has a relatively young population, due to Mormons typically marrying and starting large families younger than those in other states.

As of June 2025, it was found that 33 percent of adults in the United States aged between 18 and 29 years used X (formerly Twitter). This age group was the microblogging service’s biggest audience in the United States, followed by a 25 percent usage reach among 30- to 49-year-olds. X users in the United States As of the first quarter of 2019, X had 68 million monthly active users in the United States. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the number of monetizable daily active X users in the country amounted to 37 million. As of February 2025, 63 percent of U.S. X audiences were male and 37 percent were female. According to a February 2019 survey of social media users in the United States, X was the most popular social network for news consumption. X usage in the United States X is popular among users looking to catch up and chime in on current and trending topics and live-tweet about events and media. Live-tweeting television series or sporting events is a popular user activity, and in 2018, the most popular television series based on average number of X interactions per episode was ABC’s ‘The Bachelor.’ In terms of global sporting events, it does not get much bigger than the Olympic Games. During the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018, X accounted for 50 percent of stakeholder posts during the winter.

This statistic shows the participation in leisure-time aerobic and muscle strengthening (sports) activities among the adult population in the U.S. in 2018, sorted by gender and age. In that year, participation in sports activities with additional health benefits among women in the age between 18 and 44 years was **** percent.

Popular social media platforms in the United States Instagram was the fourth most visited social media platform in the United States as of March 2025 across desktop, mobile, and tablet devices combined, accounting for *** percent of all social media visits in the country. Despite Instagram’s popularity, Facebook remained the leading social media platform by far in the U.S., accounting for more than ** percent of all social media visits. Pinterest and X (formerly Twitter) ranked second and third in terms of visits, with ***** percent and ***** percent of visits, respectively. Instagram’s global audience Instagram’s global popularity continues to surge, with no signs of slowing down. As of January 2025, the country with the largest Instagram audience was India, with over*****million users, while the United States had the second-highest market with over**** million users, followed by Brazil, Indonesia, and Turkey, respectively. As of February 2025, Instagram was the third most popular social network globally, reaching ***** billion monthly active users.

In 2022, the rate of abortion among adolescent women aged 19 years in the United States was around 12.4 per 1,000 population. Abortion in the United States remains a controversial and divisive subject. In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the historic court ruling that gave women the right to abortion. Now states are allowed to completely ban the procedure if they so choose. However, despite the ruling and subsequent abortion bans in many states, polls show the majority of U.S. adults still favor the legalization of abortion. How many abortions are there in the U.S. per year? In 2022, there were around 613,000 legal abortions in the United States. This was one of the lowest numbers recorded since the Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973. The rate of abortions per 100 live births in 2022 was 19.9, a significant decrease from a rate of 30.6 reported in 1997. The states with the highest rates of abortion in 2022 were New Mexico, Illinois, and Kansas, while Missouri and South Dakota had the lowest rates. Abortion among adolescents The rate of abortion among adolescent women in the United States aged 15 to 19 years has also decreased over the past decade. In 2013, there were around 8.2 abortions among adolescent women per 1,000 population. By the year 2022, this figure had dropped to 5.4 per 1,000 population. The majority of abortions among adolescents occur at week nine or less of gestation. The birth control pill is one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy, but only around 23 percent of female high school students who were sexually active were using the pill in 2021.

As of October 2025, **** percent of TikTok's global audience were women between the ages of 18 and 24 years, while male users of the same age formed **** percent of the platform's audience. The online audience of the popular social video platform was further composed of **** percent of female users aged between 25 and 34 years and **** percent of male users in the same age group.

In January 2022, it was estimated that about 1.85 million male illegal immigrants living in the United States were aged between 35 and 44 years old. In that same year, it was estimated that 1.52 million female illegal immigrants living in the U.S. were between 35 and 44 years old.

As of October 2025, men aged 18 to 24 years accounted for around *** in **** Snapchat users worldwide, while women in the same age group represented **** percent of the platform’s audience. This made 18- to 24-year-olds Snapchat’s largest user segment. Additionally, approximately **** percent of users were under the age of 18. Snapchat’s global users Snapchat has experienced significant increases in global audience size in recent years. In 2022, Snapchat had over *** million users, an increase of over *** percent when compared with the number of users in 2018. By 2027, it is estimated that *** million people will be using the app. As of January 2024, India was home to almost *** million Snapchat users, whilst the United States and Pakistan had *** million and ** million users, respectively. Snapchat+ subscription Snapchat released a paid version of the service in June 2022, offering pre-release and experimental features to those willing to pay **** U.S. dollars per month. As of the fourth quarter of 2023, around ***** million users were subscribing to Snapchat+. Snapchat is not the only social platform to have introduced a subscription option. Meta Verified, X/Twitter Blue, and Reddit also present advantages to users in exchange for a monthly charge.

Globally, about 25 percent of the population is under 15 years of age and 10 percent is over 65 years of age. Africa has the youngest population worldwide. In Sub-Saharan Africa, more than 40 percent of the population is below 15 years, and only three percent are above 65, indicating the low life expectancy in several of the countries. In Europe, on the other hand, a higher share of the population is above 65 years than the population under 15 years. Fertility rates The high share of children and youth in Africa is connected to the high fertility rates on the continent. For instance, South Sudan and Niger have the highest population growth rates globally. However, about 50 percent of the world’s population live in countries with low fertility, where women have less than 2.1 children. Some countries in Europe, like Latvia and Lithuania, have experienced a population decline of one percent, and in the Cook Islands, it is even above two percent. In Europe, the majority of the population was previously working-aged adults with few dependents, but this trend is expected to reverse soon, and it is predicted that by 2050, the older population will outnumber the young in many developed countries. Growing global population As of 2025, there are 8.1 billion people living on the planet, and this is expected to reach more than nine billion before 2040. Moreover, the global population is expected to reach 10 billions around 2060, before slowing and then even falling slightly by 2100. As the population growth rates indicate, a significant share of the population increase will happen in Africa.

In 2024, it was estimated that nearly 59 percent of those aged 26 to 29 years in the United States were current alcohol drinkers, the highest rate of all age groups. Those aged 21 to 25 had the highest rates of binge alcohol use. Although the legal age to consume alcohol in the United States is 21, around 27.2 percent of those aged 18 to 20 years were already current alcohol users. Binge drinking in the United States Binge drinking is commonly defined as consuming five or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion for men and four or more drinks for women. Binge drinking is most common among adults in their 20s, and more common among Hispanics and Whites than other races or ethnicities. The states with the highest prevalence of binge drinking are North Dakota, Montana, and Iowa, while Alabama has the lowest prevalence of binge drinking of all U.S. states. In 2022, almost 22 percent of the population of North Dakota binge drank in the past 30 days, with the overall prevalence rate in the United States around 17 percent at that time. High school alcohol use Although alcohol use among teens remains a problem, the annual prevalence of alcohol use among those in grades 8, 10, and 12 has decreased dramatically over the past two decades. In 2023, it was estimated that a combined total of 30 percent of those in grades 8, 10, and 12 had used alcohol in the past year. In comparison, the annual prevalence rate of alcohol use among these grades was just over 67 percent in the year 1991. The 30-day prevalence of alcohol use for these grades has also decreased significantly. In 1991, around 40 percent of those in grades 8, 10, and 12 used alcohol in the past month, while in 2023 this rate dropped to just 14.3 percent.

A survey conducted in 2022 found that young adults aged between 18 and 24 were more likely to suffer from moderate to severe stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms. That year, around 66 percent of respondents from this age group reported stress-related symptoms, while 25 percent of those aged 65 and older had similar symptoms. Similar age group trends were also noted for negative effects on wellbeing from feelings of loneliness. Additionally, fewer men than women were likely to report having mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Anxiety, depression, and stress in Europe In Europe, there is a notable variation in the prevalence of mental illnesses. Throughout the epidemic, depression and anxiety increased in all EU nations, affecting young people, particularly young women and those in financial difficulties. A study published by the OECD reported that 55 percent of adults residing in the EU were at risk of depression in 2022. Another study, published in the same year, found that more than half of the respondents surveyed in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Italy had reported experiencing stress. Anxiety, depression, and loneliness in the U.S. In the United States, anxiety, depression, and loneliness are prevalent issues affecting a significant portion of the population. According to a survey done in 2022, one-third of U.S. adults aged between 18 and 29 years mentioned that they “always” or “often” felt depressed or lonely in the past year. Over half of U.S. adults in the same age group reported that they felt anxious. Furthermore, adults with lower household incomes were more likely than those with higher household incomes to mention that they felt anxious, lonely, or depressed.
