We're proud to offer a simple, accurate and up-to-date database of the world's cities and towns. We've built it from the ground up using authoritative sources such as the NGIA, US Geological Survey, US Census Bureau, and NASA.

Context

This dataset is meant to be used with other datasets that have features like country and city but no latitude/longitude. It is simply a list of cities in the world. Being able to put cities on a map will help people tell their stories more effectively. Another way to think about it is that you can use this make more pretty graphs!

Inspiration

I wanted to analyze a dataset and make a map, but I was only given a city name without any latitude or longotude coordinates. I found this dataset very helpful and I hoe you do too!

World Cities provides a basemap layer for the cities of the world. The cities include national capitals, provincial capitals, major population centers, and landmark cities. Population estimates are provided for those cities listed in open source data from the United Nations Statistics Division, United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and U.S. Census Bureau.

This world cities layer presents the locations of major cities of the world.To download the data for this layer as a layer package for use in ArcGIS desktop applications, please refer to World Cities.

This data is licensed under the Creative Common Attribution License as is the original data from https://www.geonames.org/. This means you have to credit geonames when using the data. The data was taken from https://github.com/datasets/world-cities/ and modified to be entirely full of lies.

This research, designed by the World Bank, and supported by the Department for International Development (DFID), aims to highlight the unprecedented transformation of the urban systems in the ECA region in the last decades, and to look at this shifts from the demographic, economic, and spatial prospectives. Cities in ECA database comprises data from 5,549 cities in 15 countries of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, as defined by the World Bank Group, and from the United Kingdom and Germany. Database information for each city is in three dimensions: demographic, spatial, and economic. The starting point to construct the Cities in ECA database was to obtain from each of the countries the list of official cities and these cities' population data. Population data collected for cities falls on or around three years: 1989, 1999, and 2010 (or the latest year available). The official list of "cities" was geo-referenced and overlaid with globally-available spatial data to produce city-level indicators capturing spatial characteristics (e.g., urban footprint) and proxies for economic activity. City-level spatial characteristics, including urban footprints (or extents) for the years 1996, 2000, and 2010 and their temporal evolution, were obtained from the Global Nighttime Lights (NTL) dataset. City-level proxies for economic activity were also estimated based on the NTL dataset. Nighttime Lights (NLS) data is produced by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) - Optical Line Scanner (OLS) database and maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

This city boundary shapefile was extracted from Esri Data and Maps for ArcGIS 2014 - U.S. Populated Place Areas. This shapefile can be joined to 500 Cities city-level Data (GIS Friendly Format) in a geographic information system (GIS) to make city-level maps.

It is estimated that more than 8 billion people live on Earth and the population is likely to hit more than 9 billion by 2050. Approximately 55 percent of Earth’s human population currently live in areas classified as urban. That number is expected to grow by 2050 to 68 percent, according to the United Nations (UN).The largest cities in the world include Tōkyō, Japan; New Delhi, India; Shanghai, China; México City, Mexico; and São Paulo, Brazil. Each of these cities classifies as a megacity, a city with more than 10 million people. The UN estimates the world will have 43 megacities by 2030.Most cities' populations are growing as people move in for greater economic, educational, and healthcare opportunities. But not all cities are expanding. Those cities whose populations are declining may be experiencing declining fertility rates (the number of births is lower than the number of deaths), shrinking economies, emigration, or have experienced a natural disaster that resulted in fatalities or forced people to leave the region.This Global Cities map layer contains data published in 2018 by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). It shows urban agglomerations. The UN DESA defines an urban agglomeration as a continuous area where population is classified at urban levels (by the country in which the city resides) regardless of what local government systems manage the area. Since not all places record data the same way, some populations may be calculated using the city population as defined by its boundary and the metropolitan area. This dataset, worldcities.csv is a comprehensive collection of geographic and demographic data for 44,383 cities worldwide, spanning 127+ countries. Sourced independently, it includes 10 columns: city, city_ascii, lat, lng, country, iso2, iso3, admin_name, capital, and population. With India (15%) and the US (11%) leading the pack, and cities like Tokyo (37.7M) and Jakarta (33.8M) topping population charts, it’s a goldmine of real-world coordinates (lat: -54.9 to 81.7, lng: -180 to 179) and stats. I used this as a foundation to generate synthetic geo-tagged tweet data (geo_gpt_tweets_8.2-10.json), pulling lat, lng, and country to anchor 1,000 GPT-related posts in realistic locations—achieving an 82% real-world chaos vibe. Perfect for mapping, clustering, or seeding your own geo-based projects!
