The gross output of the U.S. oil and gas extraction industry stood at 456 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, down from 467.7 billion dollars in the previous year. Gross output saw a net increase since 2017 and generally reflects changes in crude oil prices and underlying world market developments. Growth in industry's value added Taking into account the cost of services and goods used during production, the industry's value added has increased along greater gross output. In 2023, value added by the U.S. oil and gas extraction industry shrank to just over 250 billion U.S. dollars. Trends in domestic oil production Domestic oil production has grown exceptionally since technological advances and historically high oil prices made shale mining profitable. Between 2008 and 2023, U.S. oil production increased nearly three-fold, reaching a new peak in the latter year.

    Description

Canada has abundant resources of crude oil, with an estimated remaining ultimate potential of 52.3 106m³ (329 billion barrels) as of December 2017. Of this, oil sands account for 92 per cent. There are two major producing areas in Canada, the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, which includes Alberta, Saskatchewan and parts of British Columbia and Manitoba, and offshore eastern Canada. Oil is also produced in modest volumes in Ontario and the Northwest Territories. Although Canada was the 4th largest producer in the world in 2018, it produces only about five per cent of total daily production, so it does not have a major influence on the world oil prices. In 2018, 96 per cent of Canadian crude exports went to the U.S. The Canada Energy Regulator regulates the export of crude oil. Holders of export authorizations report monthly statistics on export activities. This dataset provides historical export volumes of crude oil (by year and month), and by either type of oil or by destination of export.

PADD 3 (Gulf Coast), which includes the oil production in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Texas, was the largest oil producing PADD, having produced some 7.9 million barrels of crude oil per day in 2021. This was a increase by roughly two million barrels daily compared to 2017.

PADDs were created during World War II (under the Petroleum Administration for War) in order to help organize the allocation of fuels from petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, etc.). For data collection purposes these regions are still used today.
