    Fossil fuels have helped our civilization get to where it is today, we’ve used them to power our homes, factories, and vehicles. Fossil fuels are plant and animal matter that died millions of years ago and have then been subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years.

    Fossil fuels come in three major groups: Coal – is mined and fuels 1/3 of the world’s power (the largest consumers are China, India, and the U.S.) Crude oil – pumped up through the earth and split through refining to produce different oils we use for fuel (like gasoline, diesel, kerosene, etc.) Natural gas – this is mainly methane found near oil deposits and caused the development of the controversial fracking process.

    Description

    The Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources dataset shows the locations of the Assessment Units (AUs) in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) World Assessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources. The assessment was conducted in 2012 and evaluated 313 AUs within 171 geologic provinces (areas where oil and gas occur in commercial quantities). An AU is a mappable volume of rock with homogenous geologic properties. Each AU was assessed for undiscovered oil and gas resources using data from published literature. In each geologic province, total petroleum systems (TPS) were also defined. A TPS is the group of geologic elements needed for oil and gas formation. The Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources dataset provides an understanding of the quantity, quality and distribution of global conventional oil and gas resources. Conventional oil and gas resources, such as crude oil and natural gas, are found in high porosity/permeability reservoirs. Unconventional oil and gas resources are found in low porosity/permeability reservoirs, such as shale and tar sands. Conventional resources are relatively easy to extract from the earth and do not require fracking. The USGS World Assessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources determined that a total of 565,298 million barrels of oil, 5,605,626 billion cubic feet of gas and 166,668 million barrels of natural gas liquids remained undiscovered as of 2011. All of these resources are conventionally extractable. However, conventional oil and gas resources are dwindling. Knowing where and how much conventional oil and gas remains undiscovered is important for understanding the world’s energy future. The Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources dataset is a geologic basis for making decisions about energy. It can help predict future energy production trends and increase understanding of the social and environmental consequences of oil and gas resource exploitation.

The abbreviation OPEC stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and includes Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the OPEC is to coordinate the oil policies of its member states. It was founded in 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq. The OPEC Reference Basket The OPEC crude oil price is defined by the price of the so-called OPEC (Reference) basket. This basket is an average of prices of the various petroleum blends that are produced by the OPEC members. Some of these oil blends are, for example: Saharan Blend from Algeria, Basra Light from Iraq, Arab Light from Saudi Arabia, BCF 17 from Venezuela, et cetera. By increasing and decreasing its oil production, OPEC tries to keep the price between a given maxima and minima. Benchmark crude oil The OPEC basket is one of the most important benchmarks for crude oil prices worldwide. Other significant benchmarks are UK Brent, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), and Dubai Crude (Fateh). Because there are many types and grades of oil, such benchmarks are indispensable for referencing them on the global oil market. The 2025 fall in prices was the result of weakened demand outlooks exacerbated by extensive U.S. trade tariffs.

Venezuelan Orinoco Belt reserves are based on the OPEC Secretariat and government announcements.Reserves include gas condensate and natural gas liquids (NGLs) as well as crude oil.Annual changes and shares of total are calculated using thousand million barrels figures.

    Description

    This table shows the supply and consumption of petroleum products and crudes as a balance sheet.

    Petroleum products include the fuels LPG, motor gasoline and diesel oil. The balance includes products used for processing or consumption in the Netherlands as well as those intended for transit.

    Crudes are crude oil, natural gas liquids and additives (intermediates for motor gasoline and transport diesel). Separate balance sheet items are available for feedstocks for processing in the Netherlands and for feedstocks for the transit trade. The difference between the two flows is that import tax is paid for products destined for production in the Netherlands, while it is not paid for transit goods.

    The following standard densities are used to convert from kg to liters of Gasoline, Diesel and Autogas delivered including excise duty: Petrol 0.75 kg/l, Diesel 0.836 kg/l and LPG 0.535 kg/l.

    This table replaces the next tables:

    Description

    This is a simulated dataset of transient well production data. This dataset was used in my Masters thesis at King Abullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and it is shared for academic use and research work.

    The dataset has 100 wells simulated at time steps of 0.2 hours for an entire year. This gives 43,800 observations per well, and grand total of 4,380,000 observations in the entire dataset. The resulting production data is then perturbed with systemic and random gauge errors to better simulate real-world gauge readings.

    The data consists of three files:
    - "wells.csv": This file details the input parameters for each simulated well.
    - "data.zip": This file houses an 850 MB "data.csv" that includes the simulated well production data.
    - "auxiliary.csv": This file includes information related to the simulation run.
