Changes in Australian viewing behaviours, marked by increased preference for subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services like Netflix, have hurt traditional broadcasters, leading to decreased advertising demand. That's why industry revenue is expected to drop at an annualised 5.2% over the five years through 2024-25 to $3.81 billion, including an anticipated dip of 3.9% in 2024-25. Major broadcasters have launched streaming platforms like Nine’s 9Now to counter this competition, offering on-demand access to their programming. Profitability plummeted in 2020 because of the pandemic and severe budget cuts in advertising. The following year, profitability jumped back up to semi-normal levels but has trended downwards since despite cost-saving measures, including wage cuts and reduced depreciation expenses, driven by a tough advertising market. However, live sports and local light entertainment programs continue to draw viewership, with shows like The Block and MasterChef Australia maintaining popularity. Over the past few years, the major broadcasters – Seven West Media, Nine Entertainment, Ten Network Holdings and ABC – have continued to dominate the market, accounting for over 90.0% of industry revenue. Although challenged by SVOD services, they've maintained their stronghold, particularly in metropolitan areas. Even so, uniform programming is causing challenges for niche broadcasters, leading to audience fatigue. Adding more pressure, online platforms like Google, Facebook and YouTube offer targeted, advanced, data-driven advertising, attracting budgets away from traditional broadcasters. This shift has led to industry consolidation as traditional broadcasters strive to preserve profitability while new entrants struggle to compete. Although industry revenue is projected to contract at an annualised rate of 0.3% to $3.8 billion by 2029–30, Australia's sports broadcasting segment is poised for growth. Leading broadcasters like Seven West Media are set to redefine live sports viewing experiences, supported by regulations that keep nationally significant sports accessible on free-to-air television and prevent monopolisation by subscription services. Continued government funding for public broadcasters like ABC and SBS will bolster industry performance in the coming years. Still, the escalating competition from subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services and online media platforms, particularly among younger audiences, threatens traditional broadcasters' viewership, advertising revenue and profitability.
