    Description

    The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) collects information about six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults in the United States, including: (1) Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; (2) Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitting diseases, including HIV infection; (3) Tobacco use; (4) Unhealthy dietary behaviors; and (5) Inadequate physical activity. YRBSS also monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is conducted during the spring of odd-numbered years and the results are typically released in the summer of the following year. Participating sites may vary from year to year; refer to the Methods page for guidance from the CDC on best practices for combining data from multiple survey years.

    The Population online databases contain data from the US Census Bureau. The Census Estimates online database contains county-level population counts for years 1970 - 2000. The data comprise the April 1st Census counts for years 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000, the July 1st intercensal estimates for years 1971-1979 and 1981-1989, and the July 1st postcensal estimates for years 1991-1999. The Census Projections online database contains population projections for years 2004-2030 by year, state, age, race and sex, produced by the Census Bureau in 2005. The data are produced by the United States Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division.

    Description

    After over two years of public reporting, the Community Profile Report will no longer be produced and distributed after February 2023. The final release will be on February 23, 2023. We want to thank everyone who contributed to the design, production, and review of this report and we hope that it provided insight into the data trends throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Data about COVID-19 will continue to be updated at CDC’s COVID Data Tracker.

    The Community Profile Report (CPR) is generated by the Data Strategy and Execution Workgroup in the Joint Coordination Cell, under the White House COVID-19 Team. It is managed by an interagency team with representatives from multiple agencies and offices (including the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, and the Indian Health Service). The CPR provides easily interpretable information on key indicators for all regions, states, core-based statistical areas (CBSAs), and counties across the United States. It is a snapshot in time that:

  7. Focuses on recent COVID-19 outcomes in the last seven days and changes relative to the week prior
  8. Provides additional contextual information at the county, CBSA, state and regional levels
  9. Supports rapid visual interpretation of results with color thresholds*

    Data in this report may differ from data on state and local websites. This may be due to differences in how data were reported (e.g., date specimen obtained, or date reported for cases) or how the metrics are calculated. Historical data may be updated over time due to delayed reporting. Data presented here use standard metrics across all geographic levels in the United States. It facilitates the understanding of COVID-19 pandemic trends across the United States by using standardized data. The footnotes describe each data source and the methods used for calculating the metrics. For additional data for any particular locality, visit the relevant health department website. Additional data and features are forthcoming.

    Effective April 30, 2021, the Community Profile Report will be distributed on Monday through Friday. There will be no impact to the data represented in these reports due to this change.

    Effective June 22, 2021, the Community Profile Report will only be updated twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

    Effective August 2, 2021, the Community Profile Report will return to being updated Monday through Friday.

    Effective June 22, 2022, the Community Profile Report will only be updated twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays.

    Dataset and data visualization details: These data were posted on October 21, 2022, archived on November 18, 2022, and revised on February 22, 2023. These data reflect cases among persons with a positive specimen collection date through September 24, 2022, and deaths among persons with a positive specimen collection date through September 3, 2022.

    Vaccination status: A person vaccinated with a primary series had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen collected ≥14 days after verifiably completing the primary series of an FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. An unvaccinated person had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen and has not been verified to have received COVID-19 vaccine. Excluded were partially vaccinated people who received at least one FDA-authorized vaccine dose but did not complete a primary series ≥14 days before collection of a specimen where SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen was detected. Additional or booster dose: A person vaccinated with a primary series and an additional or booster dose had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen collected ≥14 days after receipt of an additional or booster dose of any COVID-19 vaccine on or after August 13, 2021. For people ages 18 years and older, data are graphed starting the week including September 24, 2021, when a COVID-19 booster dose was first recommended by CDC for adults 65+ years old and people in certain populations and high risk occupational and institutional settings. For people ages 12-17 years, data are graphed starting the week of December 26, 2021, 2 weeks after the first recommendation for a booster dose for adolescents ages 16-17 years. For people ages 5-11 years, data are included starting the week of June 5, 2022, 2 weeks after the first recommendation for a booster dose for children aged 5-11 years. For people ages 50 years and older, data on second booster doses are graphed starting the week including March 29, 2022, when the recommendation was made for second boosters. Vertical lines represent dates when changes occurred in U.S. policy for COVID-19 vaccination (details provided above). Reporting is by primary series vaccine type rather than additional or booster dose vaccine type. The booster dose vaccine type may be different than the primary series vaccine type. ** Because data on the immune status of cases and associated deaths are unavailable, an additional dose in an immunocompromised person cannot be distinguished from a booster dose. This is a relevant consideration because vaccines can be less effective in this group. Deaths: A COVID-19–associated death occurred in a person with a documented COVID-19 diagnosis who died; health department staff reviewed to make a determination using vital records, public health investigation, or other data sources. Rates of COVID-19 deaths by vaccination status are reported based on when the patient was tested for COVID-19, not the date they died. Deaths usually occur up to 30 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. Participating jurisdictions: Currently, these 31 health departments that regularly link their case surveillance to immunization information system data are included in these incidence rate estimates: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, New York City (New York), North Carolina, Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia; 30 jurisdictions also report deaths among vaccinated and unvaccinated people.     Description

    The Mortality - Multiple Cause of Death data on CDC WONDER are county-level national mortality and population data spanning the yehttps://healthdata.gov/d/2sz9-6c59ars 1999-2006. These data are available in two separate data sets: one data set for years 1999-2004 with 3 race groups, and another data set for years 2005-2006 with 4 race groups and 3 Hispanic origin categories. Data are based on death certificates for U.S. residents. Each death certificate contains a single underlying cause of death, up to twenty additional multiple causes, and demographic data. The number of deaths, crude death rates, age-adjusted death rates, standard errors and 95% confidence intervals for death rates can be obtained by place of residence (total U.S., state, and county), age group (including infants), race, Hispanic ethnicity (years 2005-2006 only), sex, year of death, and cause-of-death (4-digit ICD-10 code or group of codes). The data are produced by the National Center for Health Statistics.

    This dataset describes drug poisoning deaths at the U.S. and state level by selected demographic characteristics, and includes age-adjusted death rates for drug poisoning. Deaths are classified using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD–10). Drug-poisoning deaths are defined as having ICD–10 underlying cause-of-death codes X40–X44 (unintentional), X60–X64 (suicide), X85 (homicide), or Y10–Y14 (undetermined intent). Estimates are based on the National Vital Statistics System multiple cause-of-death mortality files (1). Age-adjusted death rates (deaths per 100,000 U.S. standard population for 2000) are calculated using the direct method. Populations used for computing death rates for 2011–2017 are postcensal estimates based on the 2010 U.S. census. Rates for census years are based on populations enumerated in the corresponding censuses. Rates for noncensus years before 2010 are revised using updated intercensal population estimates and may differ from rates previously published. Death rates for some states and years may be low due to a high number of unresolved pending cases or misclassification of ICD–10 codes for unintentional poisoning as R99, “Other ill-defined and unspecified causes of mortality” (2). For example, this issue is known to affect New Jersey in 2009 and West Virginia in 2005 and 2009 but also may affect other years and other states.     The weekly respiratory virus vaccination data come from the National Immunization Survey-Adult COVID Module (NIS-ACM), National Immunization Survey-Child COVID Module (NIS-CCM), and the National Immunization Survey-Flu (NIS-Flu). The NIS-ACM provides data on Influenza (flu), COVID-19, and RSV vaccination for adults aged ≥18 years in the United States. The NIS-CCM provides data on COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 6 months-17 years in the United States. The NIS-Flu provides data on Influenza vaccination for children aged 6 months-17 years in the United States National Immunization Survey data are collected by telephone interview using a random-digit-dialed sample of cellular telephone numbers stratified by state, the District of Columbia, five local jurisdictions (Bexar County TX, Chicago IL, Houston TX, New York City NY, and Philadelphia County PA), and Guam, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. Data are weighted to represent the non-institutionalized United States population and mitigate possible bias that can result from incomplete sample frame (exclusion of households with no phone service or only landline telephones) or non-response. All responses are self-reported, or reported by a parent for children 6 months-17 years. Estimates should be interpreted with caution when there is a small sample size or wide confidence interval.

    Description
    1. Data were provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Population Health, Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch. The project was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in conjunction with the CDC Foundation. This is a filtered subset of the 500 Cities data that provides model-based small area estimates for 27 measures of chronic disease related to unhealthy behaviors (5), health outcomes (13), and use of preventive services (9). It represents a first-of-its kind effort to release information on a large scale for cities and for small areas within those cities. It includes estimates for the 500 largest US cities and approximately 28,000 census tracts within these cities. These estimates can be used to identify emerging health problems and to inform development and implementation of effective, targeted public health prevention activities. Because the small area model cannot detect effects due to local interventions, users are cautioned against using these estimates for program or policy evaluations. Data sources used to generate these measures include Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data 2015, Census Bureau 2010 census population data, and American Community Survey (ACS) 2011-2015 estimates.     Description

    The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) collects information about six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults in the United States, including: (1) Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; (2) Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitting diseases, including HIV infection; (3) Tobacco use; (4) Unhealthy dietary behaviors; and (5) Inadequate physical activity. YRBSS also monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is conducted during the spring of odd-numbered years and the results are typically released in the summer of the following year. Participating sites may vary from year to year; refer to the Methods page for guidance from the CDC on best practices for combining data from multiple survey years.
