Healthy Chicago Equity Zones is an initiative of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) to organize and support hyperlocal, community-led efforts that promote health and racial equity. Chicago is divided into six Equity Zones, through which the City collaborates with regional and neighborhood organizations to address issues of common concern – like COVID-19 vaccine distribution, health care access, violence prevention, and food security – and improve quality of life at the neighborhood level. The Equity Zones are the following. Far South: Beverly, Burnside, Calumet Heights, East Side, Hegewisch, Morgan Park, Mount Greenwood, Pullman, Riverdale, Roseland, South Deering, Washington Heights, West Pullman Near South: Auburn Gresham, Avalon Park, Chatham, Douglas, Englewood, Fuller Park, Grand Boulevard, Greater Grand Crossing, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, South Chicago, South Shore, Washington Park, West Englewood, Woodlawn North/Central: Edgewater, Lake View, Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square, Loop, Near North Side, Near South Side, North Center, Rogers Park, Uptown, West Ridge Northwest: Albany Park, Avondale, Belmont Cragin, Dunning, Edison Park, Forest Glen, Hermosa, Irving Park, Jefferson Park, Logan Square, Montclare, North Park, Norwood Park, O'Hare, Portage Park Southwest: Archer Heights, Armour Square, Ashburn, Bridgeport, Brighton Park, Chicago Lawn, Clearing, Gage Park, Garfield Ridge, McKinley Park, New City, West Elsdon, West Lawn West: Austin, East Garfield Park, Humboldt Park, North Lawndale, South Lawndale, Lower West Side, Near West Side, West Garfield Park, West Town This dataset is in a format for spatial datasets that is inherently tabular but allows for a map as a derived view. The Chicago region was a mosaic of prairies, woods, and wetlands prior to Euro-American settlement. This map shows the distribution of this vegetation. It was adapted from Marlin Bowles et al. (2015), where they digitized pre-settlement surveyor's notes. In these surveys, they recorded vegetation type at section lines, and then drew the vegetation distribution by hand. It should be noted that while these maps are largely accurate, there are instances where the surveyors made mistakes. Users should be cautious about over-interpreting the map.Links to the original publications of this research can be found here. This is the ward map for Chicago that was in effect between 1998 and early 2003. The file was derived from the TIGER 1998 voting district file. Some boundaries were altered to more closely resemble the boundaries shown in the city of Chicago's published ward maps.
ESRI shapefiles created at the University of Chicago Library Map Collection. Created during the 1990s from contemporary TIGER files. Files may have problems associated with TIGER files of the period. This dataset contains the current estimated congestion for the 29 traffic regions. For a detailed description, please go to https://tas.chicago.gov, click the About button at the bottom of the page, and then the MAP LAYERS tab.
The Chicago Traffic Tracker estimates traffic congestion on Chicago’s arterial streets (non-freeway streets) in real-time by continuously monitoring and analyzing GPS traces received from Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) buses. Two types of congestion estimates are produced every 10 minutes: 1) by Traffic Segments and 2) by Traffic Regions or Zones. Congestion estimates by traffic segments gives observed speed typically for one-half mile of a street in one direction of traffic. Traffic Segment level congestion is available for about 300 miles of principal arterials. Congestion by Traffic Region gives the average traffic condition for all arterial street segments within a region. A traffic region is comprised of two or three community areas with comparable traffic patterns. 29 regions are created to cover the entire city (except O’Hare airport area).
There is much volatility in traffic segment speed. However, the congestion estimates for the traffic regions remain consistent for a relatively longer period. Most volatility in arterial speed comes from the very nature of the arterials themselves. Due to a myriad of factors, including but not limited to frequent intersections, traffic signals, transit movements, availability of alternative routes, crashes, short length of the segments, etc. Speed on individual arterial segments can fluctuate from heavily congested to no congestion and back in a few minutes. The segment speed and traffic region congestion estimates together may give a better understanding of the actual traffic conditions.
